  1. I recently got an HDMI cable to connect my upconverting DVD player to my television, and it was working fine for a few days. Suddenly I plugged the cable back in today and I am getting no audio whatsoever. I did not change any settings and I double checked to make sure everything was in order. I have been switching the cable back and forth between DVD player and my laptop, but I don't see how this could suddenly affect the sound. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated! I did buy the cable off ebay but as far as I know it's new and in good shape.

Try disconnecting all electrical power from both DVD player and TV for 5 minutes. Then plug everything back in and try again. Sometimes a simple reset will do the trick.

  3. I did exactly that and it worked. Strange, but at least it's fixed. I'm still curious as to why I suddenly lost audio though.

Do you have a Samsung HDTV by any chance? I do and their HDTVs are kind of infamous for having HDCP sync issues. It wouldn't surprise if this was more of the same.

Don't turn it off. Unplug the TV (and it probably wouldn't hurt to unplug whatever's on the other end of the HDMI cable, as well) from the wall power socket/power strip/etc. for about five minutes to half an hour, then plug the power cable(s) back in, and see if the problem's still there.

  7. Make sure your DVD player is set to output audio to HDMI not to its digital coax or optical port.

I've run into this problem occasionally and I solved it by unplugging the HDMI cable from the DVD player and then re-inserting the HDMI plug in the DVD player.

Being unable to upscale retail(rental) DVD's is not unusual. the copy protection is intended to prevent you from upconverting. Your DVD player is the problem. What brand and model is it?
