ps: you can ignore the message in the video (as it's irrelevant)

Probably after effects or fusion or combustion or nuke or shake or something very similar. Mostly it is just a very average compositing job, using various elements. Things like the fire and sparks can be purchased from somewhere like artbeats or videocopilot

However despite your protestations, this post (your first) smacks of being a Trojan horse to get an overtly political message onto the boards.

  3. Can this be done in After Effects? Are there examples?

And regarding the political message, that was honestly not my intention, I could care less about allah, yahweh, krishna, flying spaghetti monster, etc etc

  4. okay I got a response from the creator of the video:

"The software I use is Sony Vegas 8 for the time line and the text. I also use Adobe After Effects (along with various other plug-ins) to create my intro's and most of the special effects. Then I import them in Sony Vegas 8 (for the timeline)"

Why does he need to use the SV8 timeline and text? Sorry for the noob questions, im just new at this?

Vegas is an editor, after effects is a compositor. He creates the shrot effects sequences in after effects, then edits the whole in Vegas. It is mostly amateur hour stiff - nothing complex.

  6. If I understand it correctly, say i have a video called "film.avi", to chop it up and stuff I'd use sony vegas, right?

But if i wanted to add special effects and all that'd I'd use after effects?

So do people normally edit their videos first in sony vegas, then add special effects to it with after effects? Or how does AE work, does it save individual edits as avi or something?

Video is video. It may be AVI, it may be MOV or MP4. It depend son the source and the codec being used.

    The two processes are different.

Editing is assembling all the different clips together to create a whole.

Compositing is the assembling of different elements to create a clip. In the case of your example file, you may have a background element (a simple still gradient), some text created in a 3D program, a fireball element from Art Beats and then some colour grading to tie everything together. After Effects lets you bring all of these together to create a single clip of the fireball exploding and the text appearing. You save this, and edit it into your video with Vegas.

This is editing 101 stuff. Nothing special.

Like I said, your example is pretty basic, amateur stuff.

Do people normally use Vegas ? Some do. Some use Premiere Pro, or Final Cut Pro, or Edius, or one of any number of editors. The compositing you see in that clip could even be done on the Vegas timeline, and not look much worse. Or it could be done in Wax2, Combustion, Digital Fusion, Nuke, Shake etc. These are all Compositors with similar skill but different workflows.

Kite one thing that may help is to look for a tutorial of the HUD effect parts of the screening has elements that can be learned from that. That effect is done in after effects. One things that is learned quickly when one uses both is that some things like the timeline editing and simple clip creation is best and easiest used in Vegas, whereas the deep part of the special effects really need to be done in after effects.
