I have an mp4 and i want to chop it up in virtualDub.

So i downloaded and installed virtualDub (obviously)
I got the plugins pack for it which includes an MP4 plugin and moved it all to the right place
    I installed ffdshow.
Opened virtualDub and whacked the MP4 in.

It doesn't complain or anything and i can see the total number of frames at the bottom etc.
When i try and play it back all i get is a black screen, but the frames update at the bottom and the slider to show the current position does also.

The MP4 plays fine in Windows Media Player

How should I attack this problem.

Thanks in advance any help really appreciated.

You use avidemux or videoredo 4 preview/beta to chop up mp4s.

It was made for avi video containers. Newer containers like mp4 cause lots of problems and no lossless cutting.

The MP4 plugin is broken and was given up on by the creator.

    Use the QT plugin instead.

    http://www.tateu.net/software/dl.php?f=qtvd_bin

Follow the instructions in the text file to make sure you get the files in the right place.

    You'll need QT Alternative also.

  6. The problem with doing it in vdub, is that it will require a re-encode ; It sounded like he just wanted to cut it, which would make avidemux a better choice

If you didn't mind re-encoding, then another option in vdub is to use the directshow import plugin, or import though an avisynth script

Wow! Aren't you lot the knowledgeable bunch. I should have really explained what im trying to do here. Ultimately I want to end up with a video to upload to youtube in 720p. I am taking clips from an old film i have downloaded in mp4 format (its 720 woohoo). I want to chop out the bits i need then stitch them all together, add my own audio and then use flash to overlay some animations. I got virtualDub because i used it a while ago but prob for avi.

I also have adobe premier pro 1.5 which i intend to use to put the clips together and add the audio ... but guess what, that doesnt support mp4 either.

So the plan at the minute is to download QT and see what happens.
If you know of an easier way to achieve my goal i am v interested to hear.

I got hold of some mp4 to avi convertion software called "Any Video Converter" but it took all night to make the avi and the quality is terrible

Thanks for the help so far.

I just installed the QT plugin and QTAlternative.
Video seems to load in now but if i try and play it, it goes bang. I get this error.

"An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'Quicktime'...
    ...writing address 840A0000...
    ...while running thread "Dub-I/O" (thread.cpp:163)."

When opening mp4 in Virtualdub, try clicking "ask for extended options" and then Open. Under video decoder mode, select ICM Decomp and click "save to quicktime.ini" then click OK. See if that helps.

We can thank Placio74. He's the one that that taught everyone around here and on the Virtualdub forum this trick.
