    Hey guys,

I am not sure if this questions has been asked before, but i've done some searching and still could not find an answer hopefully someone will help me.

After my wedding, the videographer gave me 3 DVD's with my wedding on them. They are all in VOB format and I am trying to create a video of my wedding, sound, effects.. etc.

I've tried using MPEG Streamclip and also DVDxDvPRO to convert them to .dv format but DVDxDv looses quality, also it would record the video without sound or the apposite. Streamclip seems to work much better, but also looses quality.

    Ok to the questions!

To what format should i convert VOB files (dv or mov)? (I am using Adobe Premier Pro CS4)
Is there better software that wont loose quality (sharpness in image) during conversation?
In average, how long should a wedding video be, post production?

mov is a highly compressed final format not recommended for editing
first try to rename your vob's to mpegs to see if you can edit them...you may not need to convert
    failing that, try vob2mpg
mpeg isn't meant to be re-compressed very many times...once, maybe twice is probably the limit with this format

Just to set the record straight....a series of VOB files IS a DVD. A video DVD can be nothing else.
It's not like the videographer had a choice.

most of the professional softwares like Adobe Premier Pro CS4 has video capturing capabilities, if you capture the video directly it will be without any loss of quality. Once required clips captured, you can enhance the clips.

Many thanks for the advice, vob2mpg is for pc, i am using a mac. But I will try to rename my files from VOB to mpeg or directly import vob into ppcs4. I read many post and people had trouble doing that, so i just thought about converting it at the beginning.

    Cheers!

You can't just rename the files, there are often errors at the VOB splits if ripped wrong.

Do this: Edit videos from DVD on a Mac
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/guides/video/edit-dvd-mac.htm

That gets files off disc properly.

MOV is just a container, it can have DV compression or uncompressed in it, too.

Its true, i tried to rename my new VOB file that i extracted using yadeX to .mpeg and imported it into PP it says that "Media Pending" and does that for hours and no change.

Any tips to what format i should convert the VOB file so it doesnt loose any quality, or maybe i need to play with the settings in MPEG Streamclip?

You can load the VOB files into MPEGStreamclip and save out as MPEG - if you haven't already tried that. Otherwise ProjectX works on a MAC so you could demux into video and audio files and then remuxing the audio and video files.

    VOB = MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video + audio stream(s) + nav data.

So you don't "convert" VOB to MPEG -- it's already an MPEG with extra crap wrapped around it. The goal is to remove the crap with extraction methods. Once you have the MPEG, well, you need MPEG-able editing tools.

Mac sucks at this task, with limited/zero MPEG editing workflows, unlike Windows options. It's the wrong tool for the job, like try to drive nails into a wall with a screwdriver.
