I use TMPGenc 2.5 to convert avi's to mpg-2 files. I have a new wide screen monitor and I'm noticing something odd.
When I view the 16:9 avi file on my monitor, the picture fills the screen completely. After converting it, the mpg-2 file, the new picture only fills about 2/3 of the screen. The aspect ratio is right...just a smaller picture. Is this normal?

Is there a way to transcode the avi and have the resulting mpg file fill the screen?

    Thanks
    Scott

When you setup the Tmpgenc settings, did you select 16:9 for "aspect ratio" on setting/video tab ?

  3. You have to specify both the source's aspect ratio and the output aspect ratio in TMPGEnc.

    Perhaps I wasn't clear... or more likely, I don't understand .

My situation is this, the converted file is 16:9. It's just that the picture size is smaller. Do your suggestions still stand?

The other odd thing is that when I created a dvd with these files, the dvd picture didn't fill my computer screen, but it filled my (standard def) TV.

Oh... and this may impact your answer, I forgot to mention that my monitor is hi def .

So, is the anomoly a function of hi-def or am I doing something wrong?

This never happened with my standard def monitor, and the settings were the same on TMPGenc

    thanks again

Well there's a difference between just 16/9 and whether the DVD is anamorphic or not.
Unfortunately the terms have been used some what loosely and the distinction is often lost.

It sounds as if you have a 16/9 in a 4:3 frame, caused probably by that "aspect ratio" setting I mentioned.

If you mean something else, please explain further.

That seems likely. That would make my anomoly a function of the high def, I guess. Is there a way to make it anamorphic (or am I asking too much for this software?)

    Thanks again

The anamorphic picture is set when you select 16/9 for aspect ratio on the setting/video tab.

    OK.
It does seem to be an issue with my monitor settings, though. I had a friend run a dvd I made him with the files I used. He has a hi def tv. The dvd worked fine. Picture was proper.

I guess I worried for nothing.

Thanks for your help. You guys are totally awsome!

Turns out that it was a high def/standard def screen issue. I tried a different transcoder (AVS) & used 16:9 & screen size of 1092x1080. I wound up with a picture that, when max'd, filled my monitor. I haven't figured how to duplicate these settings in TMPGenc. Can it be done. How?

    Again, thanks!
