Looks like normal DV or DVD wide.

It is correct if you make a DVD or other 16:9 Rec-601 output.

Not too sure of the camcorder, just got given the DVD by a guest at our wedding... put it in the DVD player and it looked a bit strange

If it is a properly encoded DVD, it should play 16:9 (letterbox on a 4:3 TV). If it is improperly encoded, it can be fixed.
What do you want to do next?Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Ok, so just checked it, it isnt encoded properly as it plays streched on a 4:3 tv...
I basically want to take the video off the DVD, then edit it with other footage....
and correct the aspect ratio...
Thank you so much for your help... what do you suggest to fix aspect? or is it just a matter of importing into an editor? -
Yeah, it's quite easy. If nothing else, you can use something like DVDPatcher to change the aspect ratio of the file (pretty much all DVD is at the same pixel resolution, just the player stretches the output according to the file flags) and that'll do it. I should think most editors and the like should give you the option to choose it.
And if all else fails... well... change the DVD player or TV settings to force it to show in widescreen mode.
If you need it in the right aspect in e.g. a computer screengrab, then 1024x576 or other sizes in proportion (careful of interlace artefacts though) will be correct.-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more! -
If your editor doesn't correctly identify the source as 16:9 all you have to do is tell it that. In most editors you right click on the video in the timeline or source clips window and specify the aspect ratio.
-
You could correct the aspect ratio flag without recoding as has been suggested.
If you want to edit, you can do this with minimal recoding by editing at I frames (half second), or using a smart render editor like the Womble products or VideoRedo which only render the affected GOP at the cut point.
Which editor are you using now?Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
