I have a HD movie file of Requiem for a Dream, and I’ve watched it before and everything was fine, but when I recently decided to watch it again, the rendering was weird, it’s like the image was shifted over to the right and displayed in a ghostly form overtop, during the whole movie.
I don’t recall anythign on my pc as having changed, so I don’t know what the problem is or how I could go about fixing it? Anyone know what the issue is?
I’ve tried to update ffdshow but it didnt fix it. Any help would be appreciated.
Here’s a screenshot:

It looks like one of the colour channnels (green in this case) has been offset horizontally from the rest.
Is this the only mp4 file with the problem? The fact that it has played back fine in the past suggests an issue that should affect other files of a similar type.
I would first look at the ffdshow video decoder options to see if one of its filters is is doing something. Updating ffdshow doesn't reset the options to default, so if something has been altered, an update won't revert it. You should also post what program you're using for playback and some basic system specs (cpu, os, gpu, ram) in case it is something related to that.Last edited by Munster1; 22nd Apr 2010 at 01:55. Thanks for the worthless comment.
Here's an eBay item you might find useful:

What would I look for that the filter is doing?
I am using Media Player Classic for playback, same as I always have, but I haven't always had the problem. Interestingly, I find the problem persists on Windows Media Player also, but *not* on Quicktime Player. It used to work on the other two just fine, and if I could, I'd like not to settle for QT since I hate it, lol.
Also, no other mp4 files are affected.
This is my system specs:
Windows XP SP2
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT - 512MB
MotherBoard:
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5K SE Rev 1.xx
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 0401 07/19/2007
Realtek Onboard Audio
2048 Megabytes DDR2 RAM
Processor:
2.00 gigahertz Intel Pentium Dual
64 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache -
Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player will both be using external codecs for this on a XP machine. In this case, most likely FFDShow. Quicktime uses it's own codec, and I suspect if you installed VLC or The KM Player you would find that it would play fine in those as well, for the same reason.
Personally, I would start by using Revo Uninstaller to uninstall FFDshow and clean out the registry (it will do it all for you), then try a reinstall to see what happens.Read my blog here.

When you open the video decoder configuration window, there should be a list of filters on the left side with either ticked or empty boxes.
One by one untick the boxes that are currently ticked to see if one of them makes a difference. My initial thought is that a colour space conversion with an odd offset on the green channel is taking place, but i'm kind of shooting in the dark.
The only other thing i can think of is that the mp4 is causing a subtitle filter to be loaded which is causing a display error (you should be able to see in MPC what filters are being loaded by right-clicking on the video while it's playing and looking under the filters submenu).
