The PS3 uses Bluray which take a lot to damage. You really have to treat them badly to scratch them.

The bottom line is that the PS3 won't play "backups", so you had better learn how to look after your toys.

PS3 discs are "data"....and data discs have much more secure copy protection mechanisms than video.
There are several navigation CDs and DVDs that have been available for several years
    that have NEVER been cracked.
Wii discs can be backed up with a special computer drive and hacking the Wii....or my dumping the
Wii game to an external HDD....which also involves hacking the Wii console.

What part of PS3 won't play "backups" don't you understand?

  8. At this point your only answer is to be more careful with your disks.

There is currently no available method to copy a PS3 game disk and then play it on the PS3. Probably in the fairly near future.

    But not today.

This is your best option. You don't buy other expensive items and treat them poorly, right? And you complain about the cost of a PS3 game but you have a BluRay burner or are considering buying one for this purpose? That's worth 3-4 PS3 games right there. I don't even have a BluRay burner on my system and I have quite a few PS3 games, none of which are scratched up at all.

  11. Sony let's you copy their game disks, but protection kicks in when you put it in the machine, I assume a PS3 is like this too?

Is it really practical with the cost of BluRay disks?

  12. I think you need to soft/hard mode the PS3 before you play copied games.isn't the Wii like that?

Wii requires a mod(mostly soft nowadays).
Two ways to back up discs.
Rip them from the Wii (via Wi-Fi?) to your computer(painfully slow) - not sure about from Wii direct to HDD attached to the Wii.
Or...use a special LG DVD-Rom drive to rip it with your computer.

the wii hard drive mods allow the games to copied directly from the wii to the drive and then will play them from the hard drive.

Totally forgot about that. Since many PS3 games exceed the 25GB single-layer size you'd have to get dual-layer 50GB BRDs and aren't those still selling for around $20 USD? That's 1/3 to 1/2 of the game cost right there without the cost of the burner factored in.

The bottom line is that Sony have gone to a great deal of trouble to prevent people hacking the PS3 or being able to play non-genuine game copies. They removed the option to install a second operating system when they released the slim version because someone appeared to be damned close to coming up with a viable hack using linux. They followed this up with the most recent firmware update, which also removes this option from the older models. While the update is optional, it basically stops you from being able to apply any further updates until you do.

So, as was suggested earlier, don't hold your breath waiting. And take a long hard look at how you treat your discs, because like I said in my first post, BDs are very difficult to damage without doing something really stupid.

  19. Better to just buy used PS3 games.

I thought the reason they didn't come out with a mod chip for it is cause the games weren't interesting. They would have done it so you could play from a HD so you wouldn't need blank expensive BR disks I bet.

    Options:
    1. "THIRD PARTY" insurance, if you’re always careful!
    2. "FULL 100% C.D.W." insurance (collision damage of the disc), if you believe that "shit" can happen.
    Cheers!

The site indicated CDs and DVDs.

Not sure about that for PS3 BR disks. My understanding is that the game disks are coated much like the BR movie disks. If so, than any scrubbing of the disk will remove some of the coating and.... good bye disk.

    I call shenanigans.

Yes, a google search for PS3 mod chips returns a lot of hits. The vast majority go nowhere, or end up at the same place.

There is only one mod chip available for the PS3, going under the delightful name of "Infectus" and I can find nothing at all out there that indicates that it actually allows you to play backups at all.

It all looks very suspect and premature to me. My reading of the sites in question is that you can install this thing now, and they will continue to work on it, and maybe, one day, it will do what other mod chips do. But not yet.

Yeah thats a new one to me, especially the "no solder modchip" for a PS3!!
    LOL!!

I know they had one for a PS2, but not for a PS3.

I read an article maybe a couple of weeks ago and they were talking about how the PS3 has been continuously locked up so good that IF they ever cracked it and produced a modchip to allow PS3 game backups to play on it, it would be some 200 wire monstrosity!!
    LOL!!

There are rumours, but i have yet to see a modchip that allows playing of backup PS3 game disc's.

And from what i am reading some chip called the "belzar" from last october, funny thing is, the website is no more...
    LOL!!
