I just turned my PC off to install a HDD. I turned the PS off and hooked up the drive. I turned the PS back on and the CPU fan, the power fan and the light on the MB comes on and goes off continuously without powering up the PC.

Reverse what you did and see it it boots.

The HDD takes mostly 12VDC, same as the fans and mobo.

I reached up an unplugged the power to the DVD Drive that I am temporarily replacing with the HDD and it fired right up. Still don't know why it caused it to not boot and why unplugging it would fix the problem.

I have never seen anything like this before. My brother had an Asus board that he put in a cheap case and it would do something like this but it only did it once and shut down. We followed Asus advice of trying to start outside of the case and it fired up so we knew the case was bad.

What are the PC specs including model number, PS wattage, PS 12v amps, etc.

This also may be a power cable issue.

    The computer is home built.

The board and CPU are a couple of years old. Gigabyte P35-DS3P with Q6600. The PS is a couple of months old. Corsair TX750W. I bought the case last week. Coolermaster CM-690.

  6. I had this same problem on a homebuilt: I'm embarrassed to say I was using a HD cable that I was somehow able to install reversed on the drive; i.e., Pin 1 to #40 connection, Pin 40 to #1 connection.

When I made the correction connection, all was well, and I was VERY pleasantly surprised that I had done no damage.
