  1. I am looking for the best product to capture video and then use that video to create VCD's of television shows. I would rather not have to deal with my VCR in this as it's getting older, and I don't have cable at the moment. I've been using antenna and it works fine to see my favorite shows. I get all the major basic networks this way--WB, UPN, NBC, ABC, Fox, etc. Is there a card I can use with this setup that will allow me to bypass the VCR to record a one hour television show? And also maybe video from downloads? Also, it would be nice to have some upgradability so that when I go to cable within the next few months, it will be a smooth transition. I'm looking to meet my needs as inexpensively as possible, but still have a good setup. Any advice on the best products to research?

    Thanks. :D

  2. basically any TV capture card can do what you want, even if your VCR doesn't have line outs.

antenna -> vcr -> coax [splitter] to PC-TV card & TV
    or
antenna -> vcr -> coax to TV, vcr line outs to PC-TV card

for playback on tv you need video/audio outs to TV or VCR LINE IN - the TV out is usually on your video card and soundcard provides the audio out.

as for which kind of card to buy? well, can only say don't buy ATI
