With the help from Baldrick I now have mp4 files that contain AC3 audio (thanks for pointing me in the right direction Baldrick)
However, if I try and play these back in Windows Media Player on Windows 7 there is no audio. The same file plays fine in VLC, audio is perfect. If I create the same file as an MKV (again containing the AC3 audio) it plays ok in both Windows Media Player and VLC.
Checking both files in Media Info show the same information, only the container is different (mp4 or MKV), the audio tracks are the same AC3 6 channel.
Why? Why does Windows Media Player not play the AC3 track contained within the mp4 video, but it will if it is contained within the MKV video?

Because WMP in windows7 does not support it. You could try with an external mp4 filter/decoder like haali media splitter.

My opinion ... I have never used Windows Media Player ... never liked it ... never reliable to play something ... I use MpcStar ... most of the time ... I especially like MpcStar because I can go forward and backwards in a video by just hitting the left and right arrow keys.

Thanks again Baldrick - Haali Media Splitter worked - don't know why I didn't already have that installed?
