I play my movies on a standalone HD Player. The player accepts avi and mpeg2 but NOT mkv so what I have been doing is converting with mkv2avi. No problems until I came across Iron Man.mkv. The English subtitles for the foreign parts are in the form of an .ass/text file within the mkv container however after converting with mkv2avi the subtitles are, according to mediainfo, no longer there and can't be shown no matter what player I use. I've tried several options but to no avail as yet. VobSub won't install on my 64bit PC and VirtualDub gives a codec error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Demux the ASS file from the MKV using MKVExtractGUI, then convert it to SRT format using the Export function in Aegisub, then copy that SRT along with the movie AVI file to your player.

Alternatively, find a software that hardcodes ASS subs during the reencode.

Spent hours and hours over this and your simple advice of "copy the srt" to the player worked a treat.
    Many thanks.
