  1. How do i make Virtualdub as portable as possible? (without using VirtualdubPortable, cos that one seems infected with spy ware.)
I'm talking about putting all needed files in one directory.

I don't mean to double post but this seems to be more in place here than purely the codecs forum.

feel free to remove or whatever if u think otherwise.

Virtualdub is portable. It unzips into a single folder with a small number of subfolders, including the plugins folder. Install the plugins you need, then copy the base virtualdub folder to a usb key and you are portable. Yes, on each new machine you may be greeted with the first time start up screen, but that is a one off. Unless you have a particularly funky plugin that does require other libraries installed outside the virtualdub folder, you should have no issues running it pretty much anywhere.

However, as virtualdub does not carry it's own codecs with it, issues such as missing codecs for reading or writing files could still be an issue. There is nothing you can do about this.

  3. You're right on the money that I wanna run Vdub from an Usb-stick.

I don't get why that is an issue? Vdub must get/load the codecs from somewhere, why not from it's own program directory? I don't even see how it could be a legal issue when we're talking about the xvid codec, it's free, which is the one i wanna install on that usb stick.

    Could you please clarify?

It doesn't LOAD codecs itself, it asks the installed OS which ones are installed! That's why it can run straight after being unzipped.

  5. If you want an editor with built in codecs try AviDemux. VirtualDub does have built in DV and MJPEG codecs.

Is there a good freeware AVI (encoded with xvid) converter to mjpeg and or DV, then?

It's not that I don't like Avidemux, it's just really so much more comfortable using stuff I know, like vdub.

  7. I should clarify that VirtualDub only has built in decoders for DV and MJPEG, not encoders.

Some other conversion programs that do have built in decoders and encoders include MeGUI and Xvid4PSP. You can install those then copy all the folders to a thumb drive and run them from there. But... you may find that they require particular versions of Microsoft .Net and/or Visual C++ runtime libraries be installed.

  8. okay, so it's all moot, i found some uni-pc's which allow installation of anything, so ... And I must say, I've used Avidemux, but only when i had to, when VirtualDub was just too picky about which or what files it wanted to stitch together. And it was just a bit odd to use, but that's cos im not used to it. Sometimes I've noticed that I've used Vdub and I'm not really aware of which keys and commands I've used, I've grown so accustomed to it.

But's likely I'll be forced to use avidemux in the end anyway, so ...

    Thanks, Tj and jagobo!
