I've only made money shooting and editing video into a finished product. Also building turnkey video systems with training.

I work for local television. However, as one could guess I do transfer work in 8mm, 16mm, etc... Videotape private ceremonies and special events, such as weddings/up and coming bands. Some record and post short videos for Web sites businesses. But my income from that is less than 35%.

Depositions videographer. It's a very part time job for me but well paid.
Trying to move to a more creative job, but this is all that's available at the time. -
Well if you count the bootlegs that I sell on ebay....
Just kidding of course!
No I don't make any money off working with video. Strictly a hobby for me.Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -
Like freebird, i am in a category that you haven't covered: People who edit video as a hobby. and don't make ANY money with video.
And we do know SOMETHING about video, so the last category is not for us either.
Do I make money? Well, that's debatable. I make 24, Lost and Heroes DVD for my brother, because he's so computer illiterate, he can't use an usb stick capable DVD player. So directly, I don't make money, I just save my brother money. And time and irritation over missed episodes. Indirectly, he theoretically gets me into contact with people who could give me jobs. In reality, this has never happened ....Looking for subtitles of: Höök tt0997023, Lime tt0269480, La clé sur la porte tt0077348. tt=iMDb.com Found Desideria tt0081724 subtitle! :-) -
The company I'm with is a self-contained content provider, and we only do production and post work on our own projects (non-broadcast, non-theatrical, educational and training programs for specifically targeted niche markets). As copyright holders of our products, we enjoy the miracle of residual income. (That is, we keep getting paid for things we did years ago.)
You can make a living if you know what you're doing, but there is always risk involved. You never stop educating yourself and you never allow yourself to be paralyzed by fear. Resourcefulness is key. (Although I started popping up in this forum for the purpose of helping others, I've actually picked up quite a few cost-cutting tips over time. This has become one of my favorite websites.) -
I have a camera shop and offer video to DVD services here. Film to DVD is sent out to a vendor and charge a mark-up. The store really makes money on this, I draw a salary from the store.
Maybe 10% of my personal income comes from doing video work, primarily photo and video montage work. I do editing (ie., "I shot my son's wedding and I want scenes with my drunken uncle removed") maybe 2 or three times a year.
Anything past that is all hobby and learning work for me.

I spend 70% of my day sat staring at either After Effects or Premiere, and then about 20% behind a camera....the other 10% usually involves me eating, doing some photography and doing very standard jobs such as copying dvd's or reproducing one ten second clip onto many many machines but all slightly different. Either that or i'm fixing something technical that has gone wrong.
I guess i do make all my money by working with video, but its not exactly as varied and creative as a lot of people think it would be. -

What money?
But i can tell you:
there is just something...about the "video's learning procedure"!
I DO love it !!! -

Freelance camera man (documentaries, educational videos, etc...), some "one man band" projects like taping theater plays or dance performances and some personal (or friends´) proyects (shorts basically)
This site and its memenbers have helped me a lot (since vcdhelp days) to improve and deliver greater quality work. And altough I know next to nothing about computing per se, I enjoy a lot working with video, so I kinde see it as a paying hobby -

Losing one's sense of humor....
is nothing to laugh at. -
Owing to the small number of choices, I had to go with "10-49%". That's taking what proportion of my everyday job involves working with video right now... I don't "make money" from it per se, but it's part of what I do to make money, if you know what I mean.
I think if I was being paid piece-meal for the output I produce, I'd be very tired, hungry and possibly homeless or in an asylum by now. It's nice to be able to take a break from it and go, e.g, replace a burnt out VGA splitter on a data-projector rig or show someone how to turn the volume up on their workstation...
But then again if I was self employed I'd probably invest in far better source kit, software, and computer to run it on. (Don't let anyone fool you - a T2100 Core2Duo based PC is not fast. So.. much.. waiting..)
((in fact my potential proportion is steadily going down - was recently effectively banned from helping students with video projects at anything but a purely tech-hiccup level (it may count as cheating!), and we're looking into buying easy-peasy "presentation capture" software that would pretty much automate the "heavier" video work I do at present... all it would need is someone to hang around and pan the camera, sometimes))

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more! -
i do 15 to 25 vhs tapes to dvd including 8m & dv tapes & i just had to get a betamax player from flee-bay for the demand.(£200).
its a side line as i run a PC Shop(20 years)i dont do editing yet but thinking obout it for the future -
I want to know what those 18% of voters are doing here if they don't do any video work.
Myth. (I know, it's hard to believe, right?)
But most software still only supports 1-2 cores. To "do more", you don't buy fancy quad cores, you KVM 8-12 systems per desk or per user. Very often, that's still cheaper than 2-3 of these fancy quads.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
