One of gaming's oldest records was just blown up. And it wasn't an easy shot.

After a grueling 58 hours of continuous play, John McAllister of Seattle, Washington officially became the best Asteroids player on the planet by scoring an unthinkable 41,338,740 points in the classic 1979 coin-op arcade game. The previous mark of 41,336,440 was set by Scott Safran back in 1982 -- the longest standing record in gaming -- and was considered virtually unbreakable.

I remember this being the kind of thing teens and kids talked about back in the 80s ... but that's about it.

Games went from casual activity of the masses (done in arcade, with other real-life people) to super-nerds and uber-dorks that hide in bedrooms and pee in bottles, while they cuss out other players with headsets.

I miss the days when we'd go to the arcade, or where we'd go to each other's house for overnight game playing on weekends (NES, Sega Master System, Atari, Genesis, etc). Kids miss out now -- by "kids", I guess I mean everybody from 5 to 25 -- no clue how much fun video games can really be, when done with other people sitting in the same room.

Even after college, a lot of us still did PS1, PS2 and N64 to unwind from work, weekend get-togethers.

Scarey: I remember the first time that I saw an Asteroids machine. Kansas City, 1978. There weren't any where I lived, and pinball was the greatest visual experience in the game room (did I say we were a little behind the big cities?).
