O.k. it's been a while, and I've been busy, but I just got around to making a copy the other day, and it seems just fine. I created the image from the original DVD with ImgBurn though, not Dvd Decrypter, and no, there is absolutely no copy protection. After creating the image, I simple burned it to a Verbatim DVD+R DL. Didn't touch any seeetings or anything else in ImgBurn. It played fine on both drives, and my standalone Dvd player, so I'm assuming it made a perfect copy.
The one strange thing is tonight, I was comparing the 2, and it seemed the store bought Dvd loaded up and played faster than the copy, and it also had trouble reading it the next time I tried, but then it did, and then seemed just fine. Would the computer drive be pickier about reading the copy, or??
Also, since there is no copy protection, was there any disadvantage to creating the image with ImgBurn, as opposed to Dvd Decrypter? If so, should I do it again with Dvd Decrypter?
Just to clarify.....I'm making a copy because 2 copies of this Dvd made my Dvd player vibrate, as well as both my computer drives, so I decided to make a copy of the 3rd one I got, as my partial copy proved it was the physical dvd itself causing the vibration. This record company use a bunch of out of balance discs, and I couldn't keep returning them. The full copy I made doesn't exhibit this behavior at all, so it is the discs, hands down.
Anyway, appreciate any feedback on whether or not the method I used is sufficient, or If I should still use Dvd Decrypter to rip it first. If so, whjat is the exact right way to do that? Thanks! -
IMGBURN is what you need to use....IMHO if you're getting problems even after burning the Verbatim DL discs then it's most likely your dvd burner that's the culprit....I had bought SONY OPTIARC 7240S drives which both times had to be returned because it failed at burning Verbatim DL discs and single layer discs as well. If you can borrow another dvd burner to burn another Verbatim DL disc that would be the best test....DVD Burners don't last forever and they're so damn cheap these days. Those SONY OPTIARC 7240S drives are $20.00 now at Newegg.
Just my 2 freaking cents! -
Thanks for your input! Not sure if it's really a problem, so to speak, because the DVD plays fine, it's just that yesterday it didn't want to load in my computer, and the original loads right up and starts playing. That was why I was asking if there is a difference between creating the image with ImgBurn, as opposed to ripping it with DVD Decrypter. I have had that particular drive for a while though, so maybe I'll look into a new one.

Sony Optiarc 7240S dvd burner, $19.99 with FREE SHIPPING. Can't get it any better than that. This drive does DL burning well according to the freaks over at myce.com....they used to be called CDFreaks.com.

Thanks! I most likely just do that, as one of my drives is really old anyway. I just played the DVD on my standalone player, and it's fine, but it still acts weird with both of my drives, but the original doesn't. You don't think it has anything to do with creating the image with ImgBurn, as opposed to ripping it with DVD Decrypter?
Reason I'm making extra sure is the one copy I've done is a test copy, to make sure everything is o.k. with the method I used and whatnot. I have 4 more DL Verbatim discs, and this is a double DVD, so I want to make sure the next two are perfect. -
You need to understand that DVD DECRYPTER is no longer updated. IMGBURN is updated software and reliable. BTW both programs were created by LightningUK. Buy yourself the new SONY Optiarc drive and use those remaining Verbatim DL discs. I wouldn't even burn anything more on your old SONY 820 dvd burner.
-
O.k. cool....appreciate the input, once again.
I have a Sony CD-RW CRX320E, and the Sony DVD RW DRU-820A, so yeah, they are both outdated, by a long shot. Don't burn too many dvd's, but want to do it right when I do. I'll replace the CRX320E with the Optiarc, since that is the really outdated drive. I hear the optiarc doesn't come with cables and whatnot, and correct me If I'm wrong, but I'm simply going to unplug the CRX320E, and plug in the Optiarc, so who really cares, right? I read that as a "con" in the pros and cons. Maybe I'm missing something, but that doesn't seem like that big of a deal. And, don't you make one of the drives the slave drive, or something like that? I remember something about then when putting the 820A in. -
The SONY OPTIARC drive is a SATA drive and not IDE (PATA) drive. If you don't have any SATA ports on your motherboard then you'll need to get a IDE (PATA) dvd burner.

I've used the LG GH22NP20 dvd burner in builds for relatives or as replacements which work great. Only thing is LG drives have their read speeds locked meaning it will take long to rip discs.

Yes one dvd burner will be set to MASTER and the secondary dvd burner will be set to SLAVE. You'll have to adjust the jumper setting in the back of the dvd burner to either MASTER or SLAVE. Also newer dvd burners require using a 80 conductor ide cable or the drives will not work correctly.

Thank you! Glad I asked that question before ordering. I have a 2004 Dell Dimension 4400, and have no idea if I have SATA ports on the motherboard. I could open it and look, I guess, but don't know exactly what I'd be looking for. I've gotta assume that at this point, wouldn't I be just as well off using the type of drive that I know I have already? I'd open the tower and look though, if it's worth it. Would the OPTIARC plug into the SATA port, and the 820A would remain plugged in the way it is now???
Also, with that 80 conducter ide cable......I'd simply unplug the old one, and plug in the new one, yes? -
It would be better to buy a new 80 conductor ide cable because for some odd reason peeps change out their dvd burners and then the new dvd burners don't work. So to be on the safe side I'd say buy a new ide cable.
Yuh, looking over at the Dell site your dimension 4400 doesn't support sata but you do have pci slots where you could get a PCI Sata controller card to use a sata dvd burner.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4400/specs.htm#1103140
IMHO for you I'd suggest sticking to getting a IDE dvd burner. -
Well, my PCI slots are being used, so that makes that decision easy, lol! By today's standards, this is an old computer, but it's still going, and in this economy, gotta stick with what is working for now. Anyway, would you recommend that LG the most, out of all the ones on that page you linked me to?
Another question is....if using these discs http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F0ELOG/ref=oss_product with a burner that is capable of faster speeds than these allow, you simply write at a speed that is lower than the disc limit, correct? Hate to ask what I'm sure is probably a dumb question, but that's how ya learn, right? -
The LG ide burner I linked to is fine. There's not a whole lot of ide burners that burn the fire in me since most manufacturers with the exception of LG, use rebadged drives. Which means they don't manufacture their own dvd burners. I found out recently that Pioneer still manufactures their own dvd burners but they've changed to mediatek chipsets instead of the nec chipsets.
The LG drive is fine as I've used it for replacement drives for relatives/friends. The only advantage the Pioneer would have is the read speed is not locked like LG drives. Although if you ever come across a dvd disc that's scratched the LG drive would be good as the read speed is slow compared to all the other manufacturers of dvd burners.
I only burn DL media at the speed it's recommended at. In other words if the burn speed is 2.4x that's what I would burn it at. DL media is expensive to me so I burn at what the rated speed is. But then again if you have the 4x spd DL media then by all means burn it at that speed as long as your dvd burner can burn at that speed for DL media. -
I don't burn too many dvd's anyway, so the speed isn't that big of a deal. I usually just walk away and do something while it is writing, so no biggie really.
Those discs I got are 8x, so it's 8x or slower, correct? And, correct me If I'm wrong, but isn't slower still better? -
If the LG ide dvd burner can burn DL media at 8x then burn it at that speed. Sure slower is fine but why burn it at a lower speed if the DL media and burner can burn at 8x speed.
I just checked that LG ide drive specs and it can burn DVD+R DL at 16x speed. -

Yeah, I think I'm going to get that one. Amazon has it the same price as Newegg, and I was going to get a new cable too, but just curious......would an 18" cable suffice, like this one http://www.amazon.com/ATA-100-40TP-Black-Round-Cable/dp/B000I967W8/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&...5969458&sr=1-8 ?
-
-
Yeah, I was just going to add it to make it go over $25 to get the free shipping, but maybe I'll go with the one you linked me to instead.
-
My suggestion to you is to order the dvd burner from Newegg because if there's a defect of some sort from Amazon. The return process is very slow...well for me it was slow when I returned a computer case to them....IMHO less hassle with Newegg....it's up to you where you wanna purchase the LG ide dvd burner and ide cable.
-
Wow, that's strange, because the last couple times I've had an issue with a product, they have sent me the replacement overnight, and emailed me the return prepaid shipping label instantly, and gave me 30 days to return the defective product, so I wasn't out a dime. They have always been that way, that I can remember.
