  1. I know there's probably something in the archives but I'm looking for the lastest opinions on the best DVD ripping software that will rip to mpg format. I have one already but it's not working for the particular project I'm working on for some reason. Thanks in advance for any help.

A ripper just rips/decrypts a commercial dvd, like dvdfab decrypter or anydvd.

I guess you want a tool that CONVERTS to mpg, like Vob2mpg. Or actually, it doesn't convert, it remuxes it to a mpg. .

DVD Decrypter will rip to a VOB.
If it's homemade, rename to .MPG -- if retail, demux to base video+audio (don't rename).

Some DVDs use copy protection methods like ARCCOS that the older decrypters can't handle at all. The free DVDFab runs months behind the commercial copy, so depending on what you are ripping and how soon you need it to be ripped, you may have to buy a copy of DVDFab or AnyDVD. The days of the free rippers being able to rip all current DVDs are gone forever. ARCCOS changes every few months or so and it takes time and money paid to programmers to keep up with the changes. The only people who can spend the time it takes to keep up with the changes are commercial vendors like for DVDFab and AnyDVD.

  5. Once again, you guys are awesome. This is an awesome forum. I'm going to refer back to these suggestions later.

I tried using VideoReDo for this issue while waiting for your responses and it seemed to work very well, as far as I can tell. Is this program as awesome as it seems? I was able to "Open Title From a DVD" from the File menu. It then recognized a problem with the file (probably the same problem that prevented me from using the other software previously) and suggested that I use the "QuickStream Fix" from the Tools menu. After that, all I had to do was "re-mux" the file to mpg. It almost seems to good to be true. Theoretically, did I wind up doing OK on quality with this method or should I have used one of the other suggestions? Is it safe to say that I can use VideoReDo in place of a DVD ripper?

Thanks, Lordsmurf. Yes, this DVD was homemade, which, I guess is why the VideoReDo worked so well? I'll be referring back here again later and will look into these links you posted also.

I just tried DVD Decrypter. I've tried this before also and get stuck at the same place. You said I could re-name to .MPG? Where in the program can I do that? The version I have is 3.5.4.0. which, I think is the most recent. I don't see anything that will allow me to rename as MPG. I just wind up with all of the VOB IFO & BUP files when I'm finished.

First, in Windows XP go to My Computer and select Tools -> Folder Options -> View, in Win7 go to Computer -> Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View. Make sure "Hide extenstions for known file types" is disabled. Then go to your VOB file. Right click on it and select Rename. Change .VOB to .MPG (if the file is still on the DVD you have to copy it to your hard drive first). That doesn't really make the VOB file an MPG file but it may be enough for some programs.
