  1. I apologize if this question has been asked before, but I was unable to find an instance of it after browsing through various threads..

simply put, I would like to know of some models of DVD players which will support the play of DVD-Rs that contain AVI files on them. for example, I have many movies in AVI format that are burnt onto DVD-Rs.. I am able to fit about 6 movies on each disc (with each movie being roughly 700MB in size).. I am looking for a player that will recognize them and play them.

I have NO desire to recode/reburn any of them into various other formats (such as VOB, ISO, etc).. I simply want some recommendations of players which will play them as they are. my friend once had a DVD player that supported them.. upon reading the disc, it would display an 'explorer' type menu and allow you to select which movie to play from the disc. my DVD player opens up a similar type of menu when playing discs with folders containing MP3 files, but it won't recognize discs with AVI movies on them.

I am not looking at any type of media players like the WD Media Center or anything like that.. I know there have got to be regular DVD players still in production that support this function, and would appreciate any makes/models that are known to support to support these types of discs/files.

    thank you!

Well, first off, it would help if you filed out your info....
    As in YOUR LOCATION

But assuming you are in the U.S. here is a link to one i just posted for someone else...

    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Philips-DVD-Player-with-Upconversion-DivX-Ultra-DVP3982-F7/11600020

And by "avi" i assume you meant Xvid/Divx files.

  3. Philips DVP-5990, 5992, Pioneer DV-420V-K

Note: AVI is a container. It can contain audio and video compressed (or not) with any of a number of codecs. DVD players that play AVI files are usually limted to Divx/Xvid video and MP3/AC3 audio.

  4. thank you for the lightning fast answers so far, guys! It's funny, as I was actually just looking at the Philips DVP3982 and the DVP5990 earlier today (both of which were recommended here in reply to my post).. it seems the 5990 is basically the same as the 3982, only it has the additional USB port? That doesn't really matter either way, but I suppose it would be nice to have that feature as well, for just a few bucks more. But the bulk of my movies are already burnt to discs.

And yes, I'm in the US.. sorry for not specifying that!

So it looks like I'll be buying one of these two models.. if anyone else has any other recommendations, please let me know!

Thanks again.. this is a great place for answers!
