My LG DivX DVDPlayer wonŽt play the video for this .avi, it plays only the audio.
Is there a way to make this file compatible without having to reencode it?

It's H.264 video. You need to convert it to Xvid/Divx to play it on a Divx player. Maybe XviD4PSP or Handbrake. Or one of these All-in-one converters: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/all-in-one-video-converters

And yes, you will have to re-encode it.

Okay, but if I reencode it using Avidemux, for instance, IŽll have to go for a quantiser = 2 to reach a quality near the original, what doubles the file size. Is there a better way to do this, preserving the original quality without having that much larger file?

H264 compresses much better than Xvid/Divx, so to maintain the same quality you must go for a larger file size, or get yourself a player than handles H264 video.
