  1. Is there a way that I can make cuts to an .mpg video file while keeping it in .mpg format and not have to re-render, loosing quality in the process? I don't think I can do this in Vegas. It seems that in Vegas, once bringing the file in, it has to then be saved as a vegas file. I can, of course, do the cutting there, but then would have to re-render it again back to .mpg. I'd loose quality by doing this, right? Is there a software that will allow me to keep it in .mpg format without having to re-render and loose quality? I know this sounds weird. I've gotten myself into a complicated situation.

any editor would have to re-encode cuts and edits. mpeg-2 is a long gop format and there is no way around it. the best at it is probably womble's products. vegas 9.0 can re-render just the cuts and edits if no re-compress long gop rendering is turned on in preferences.

Mpg2Cut2 can do rudimentary edits, but only on I-frames of GOPs. If you don't need frame-accurate editing, transitions, effects, or title keys, try that. Otherwise, go with what aedipuss suggested.

Also, Videoredo works well. It does have to re-encode at cut points like aedipuss mentioned, but that still greatly reduces the time and keeps most of the frames untouched. I have used VideoRedo for about 4 years now and have had great success with it.

But it can't save as .mpg, which is what this thread is about.

Why bother to post then? - as I've already said, it can't.

Ah, I get it - you're the same San Diego spammer that posted above as mike.green.
