I used to be able to just scan one file at a time in AVG, now it scans several before scanning the one I wanted to scan. Tried right clicking as I would in the past and going to AVG and scanning file. Has anyone else had this problem? The only other option is downloading the program again.

Did this happen after a recent update?

Do you use the free version? If so and you would like to still use AVG I would just do a clean install of the program.

I used AVG in the past and it wasn't finding everything it should so I got a little more strict... avast! Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition. All free.

I did a complete scan with AVG and found nothing. Then I did scans with these programs and here's my face
I found a lot of junk and even a couple of virus files. I've been using these programs for a long time now and have had no problems at all!!! Avast will stop a virus download in its tracks.

If you would like to change to these let us know because a lot of people at this forum use these programs and would be happy to help you use them, very easy

But like I said, if you want to stick with AVG you may just need to change some settings in the program due to an update or just do a clean install. Good luck

Thanks for the info and yes, it started after an update. I think I'll give Avast a try. I went into the setting and changed some things and still, it wants to scan a bunch of other files rather than just the one I wanted. I'll get Avast and see how it does. Thanks for the response.

Not a problem. You won't be disappointed with Avast. The other two programs I use for a biweekly scan and I use Avast as my real time scanner.

I am running Vista, any other recommendations on PC Security programs (Firewall, Spyware, Ad Aware, etc)? I currently use SpyBot, Ad-Aware and Online Armor. Used to use Sygate Personal Firewall, but it wasn't compatible with Vista.

I'm not familiar with those programs but have heard good things about them. Here's a screen shot of what SUPERAntiSpyware will scan for you, very nice program, I just disable the real time scanner because I really only need Avast to do so.

As of any other programs I'm sure someone will post a few in a couple of minutes

  7. Avast, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spyware Blaster, CCleaner, and Firefox with Adblock Plus and NoScript. Online Armour is decent for a firewall. Comodo is my favorite but not as user friendly. Adaware is junk now days, and Spybot isn't nearly as good as it use to be.

Have you tried opening the directory that has the file, right click, select "scan with AVG Free"?
