Recently my internet connection is going on and off for some reason. It just disconnects and connects right away. I've tried turning off the router and modem and refreshing my ip but no luck. maybe its a router problem?? i using a recertified wireless n router that i bought about a year ago and i believe this happened before

  2. From the School of Hard Knocks Manual, Chapter Geek:

Start with the no cost/cheapest fixes first to isolate the problem:

o Change any associated cables one at a time and see what happens.

o If that didn't help, I'd try the cable modem and router with another computer, if I had access to one. If it doesn't work, that's a hint the problem "moved" with one or both of those units.

o Can you use the cable modem directly to your computer without using a router? If so, and it works, the router's bad. If it doesn't, it may be your cable modem.

I've forgotten to do this lo/no cost approach a couple of time and felt really dumb when I remembered to do the "cheapest checks"! I usually remembered this AFTER I'd bought something I didn't need.

Good luck and let us know what your solution was.

its not the cable problem because all the connections are dead including my ps3. i tried connecting it directly to the modem and no disconnections so far so it must be the router. Any ideas how to fix this or is it time for a new one?

Three suggestions: #1-check for interference from close-by microwaves, motors that emit hi-freguency static, etc. #2-call your ISP provider and walk through with their tech support; comcast is pretty good about this; #3 and most likely

  5. Try updating the router firmware and resetting the security to default, also make sure any other wireless device is off including expanders. If it continues then it's time for a new router.

dont think it has to do with other wireless devices nearby because the router was has always been where it was before and no problem. I tried updating the firmware and using the reset button to format to factory setting but no luck.

Make sure your system is not too far away from your wireless router. By placing your mouse pointer over the wireless connection icon, located in the bottom right corner of your taskbar, you can check to see if your signal strength is good. Anything less than a good signal can cause disconnect connections. You should relocate your wireless router closer to your system for better signal strength.
If it has good strength, borrow another laptop with a wireless card and see if that laptop can connect to the internet. Set wireless connection settings to the same settings that your wireless card is set to. If it connects to the internet then you may have a bad wireless card. Try reconfiguring your wireless card settings.

Is your cable modem getting over heated by downloading, I have known people with that being the cause. Others have replaced their modems and that fixed it.

  10. Are you in China and trying to go to Falun Gong websites? This could cause your internet to disconnect for a while.

Check how hot your modem and router are. They have vents for cooling, make sure they are not blocked or full of dust.
A friend had his modem go bad and replaced a couple of times before he discovered that it was overheating due to being placed vertically rather than horizontally.

my modem does get a little hot and i never turn it off but i dont think it the modem problem because if i directly connect the ethernet to the modem, it works fine. router doesn't really get hot though.

Just a thought. My firewall once started to kick me off of my internet. I would be on and after 15 minutes, boom, out.
