finally installed vlc 1.05 after using 0.86c since i discovered vlc.
unfortunately it is very unstable in full screen mode when i play avi/divx/xvid
is this a common issue with this version?
can anyone give me a reason not to re-install the old version?

Actually, as far as I've seen, the VLC installers don't delete your old settings when installing. They give you the option (which you should use, really) to delete the existing settings, along with another option to purge the settings within VLC's settings dialog. It just seems as though VLC's settings can easily become corrupted or otherwise messed up, for some reason.
Well, that, and new versions don't always seem to play well with the settings from earlier versions, too.If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -

the problem only occurs when i go into full screen with only certain avi files.
i thought maybe it was with certain codecs but after trying and gspotting a bunch of files it is not obvious.
for example certain movies encoded with xvid are fine while others are REALLY choppy.
i should mention that the choppyness ONLY occurs when i go into fullscreen for about 6 or 7 seconds, then it seems to stabilize until i make the window small again and full screen again. problem does not occur when i make the window fullsize - only when fullscreen (double clicking screen)
this never happened in older version of vlccheck out my trip hop beats: http://www.youtube.com/user/octeuron -
You could uninstall it, then re-install, making sure to have the installer delete the old settings. If no luck there, I would try updating your video card drivers. If you have a weaker video card or a slow system, you may have problems with high definition video, no matter what player you use, but that rarely happens with Xvids.

Check your laptop manufacturer's support pages for the latest video driver for your model.
vlc 1.05 is working fine here with NVidia chipsets.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

drivers should always be updated directly from the manufacturers website
try to avoid updating your drivers using microsoft windows or other 3rd party websites
also, when you upgrade from one version of software to another it is oftentimes better to completely uninstall the old program and then do a completely new clean install with the new version.
