I will say one thing I can't figure out. My bd rips with ripbot264 were averaging 8 to 9 GB and lately after last update they are 4 or 5 and I don't think I changed anything. I have been using cq 18, 4.1, 1280x720, 5.1aften ac3 640, mkv and resulting files, even off same originals are now about 60% of what they were! cant figure out why.

Atak did some other defaults change with latest update?

BTW, thank you for the nice gui.

  6. ALWAYS JUDGE QUALITY NOT SIZE! x264 is being improved constantly.

    Atak,
Again thank you for your great program and your responsiveness.

I have a hard time comparatively judging relative quality of various settings because most of my recodes are done over night and I can't really see doing four and trying to judge for myself, especially when there is so much accumulated knowledge on the nuances of various settings by people more expert than myself.

For me $0.80 of hard drive space vs $0.40 isn't much of a difference for the 10 or 20% of my collection that involves cinematography or actions sequences that are best in blue ray. full b rips of say 40GB are a bit different than 4 vs 8 gb. I just want to bring them down to under 10 GB which should not be too much considering my displays are 720.

I am just trying to figure out why I am getting 4GB from a 40GB original even with cq of 18 and 4.1. Is that all "improvements" in x264? Is a 4 GB compressed BD much better than a 6 GB SD? am I acquiring BD and reducing it to the point that it is no better than SD despite using 18 and 4.1?

  8. CRF@18 is enough to achive very high quality. Some movies are simply easier to compress. Less motion , wider aspect ratio (1920x800) , and so on.
