No wonder China started a huge boom in the VCD market... 1/3 of the worlds population lives there.

    Hello,

    Yep...

And also they're trying their own dvd standard. Isn't like edvd or something???

That's so they don't have to pay the dvd forum licensing fees.....

I guess in a country of like 2 billion people, you can create your own market and isolate yourself completely.

    Hello,

Umm.... Doesn't Canada, Mexico, and Japan use NTSC as well??????

    Kevin

EDIT - Besides they still would have made the region coding to prevent easy buying....

More like 4+ years old (the article, I mean). Somewhat interesting. All these years later, it seems more like hype than anything else.

How many people here actually own some true Chinese-pressed VCDs? They're really not that good, and it's easy to see why something that barely looks as good as EP mode VHS failed at first sight.

Did they really fail though? It seems that China gave them a good run.

I'm assuming he meant failed in the US at first. If you count China, which you should of course since that's 99% of its market and the most populous region in the world, VCD is easily one of the most successful video formats ever created. Worldwide, VCDs still show greater sales then DVDs. (I mean total past and present sales, DVDs probably outsell VCDs now but they've got major ground to cover to catch up.) Worldwide, I bet more people own dedicated VCD players then they do DVD players.

    Hello,

I thought dvd was the fastest accepted product ever??? Or is that US only???? It went balistic the last 3-5 years.... Having them sell under $100US certainly helped

It's strange how we (people in the US) measure the success of a product. It always depends on how well it does in our country. I've seen alot of reviews for different digital devices that use the Sony Memory stick. Every reviewer makes the same comment... Sony is still trying to hold on to the memory stick technology that hasn't caught on.

They should qualify that by saying "caught on in the US."

I'm positive that DVDs were not the fastest accepted product ever. If you mean fastest accepted video format then maybe, but I still doubt it. Regardless, historically VCDs have been much more popular and much more widespread then DVDs in Asia, and since this accounts for most of the world's population, these stats apply worldwide even though VCDs have never been more then a niche market in the US.

Even today, VCDs still sell like hotcakes in Asia.
