As I understand it, USB ports on cable boxes are almost always disabled for output.
I looked at a manual for that model and it has an S-Video line out. That is the best video source you have available for recording, using a capture card or TV tuner card with an S-Video line in. The composite connection is the next best, and the coax out is the least desireable.
The composite out would be used if you get a capture card that has composite in but not s-video in. The coax out would be used with a TV tuner card that has no line inputs, only an analog tuner.
You will also need to get a remote control kit that includes an IR blaster if you want your PC to control the cable box, plus PVR software.Last edited by usually_quiet; 14th Mar 2010 at 23:16. Reason: Added some missing information

Firewire recording from a cable box to a PC is possible. See here.

I took a quick look and perhaps I missed something, but it seems that your box is not supported. -
The cable box in question has no firewire port, only USB, RF, S-Video, and composite ports. The USB port is not used for video output. The manual said it could be used to connect a keyboard.

After reading your original post more carefully, it seems to me that what you are actually looking for when you say you want to "record some of the shows" that you are "unable to see" is a way to hack your cable box to get stuff you aren't paying for. We can't help you here with that. It not only violates our terms of service but I honestly don't know if what you propose is even possible.

far from wanting to hack my cable box i just dont waht to buy a tevo if i can use the cable box and the computer i already have.i am not big on stealing stuff as i pay for HBO and cinemax as well as over 100 other channels.i am not quite sure where u got that i was looking to take something i was not willing to pay for in the little i posted. thanks for lumping me into the dirtbag group.what i am looking to do is use the electronics i have on hand to do what i did with a vcr in days gone by.i was looking at my cable box and noticed the usb port and thought that i might be able to record a few shows that i cant watch because they are on at 4am and hopefully i am sleeping.whatever.if some kind of proof of what i am saying is needed to prove what i am saying is true i would be happy to post that as well.also i have posted on other forums and have been told that it is not posable to record any pat per view like HBO ect.have a nice day.

Because you said "i was thinking that i might try to record some of the shows that i am unable to see". Now if you had said "i was thinking that i might try to record some of the shows that i am unable to see because they are on at 4:00am when I'm asleep" then nobody would've come to that conclusion.
You will need either a capture card or you could use the Hauppauge HD PVR http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116030&Tpk=Hauppauge%20HD%20PVR which is able to capture from composite. You could also upgrade your regular cable box to a recordable cable box and just capture to the onboard HDD. I was told that the USB port on the recordable cable box is for using an extender HDD like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136384 but it uses the e-SATA port.
My friend has the DishNetwork HD-DVR and he is able to record HBO and Showtime to the DVR and then copy that to his Philips DVD recorder and put the content on his computer with the DVD drive. If he had the Hauppauge DVR then he could omit the Philips process which crops off the right and left edges of all his recordings. -
i am not sure i can buy my a cable box of my own.i am cox cable subscriber and i will have to call and ask them if that is possable.hope springs eternal.i was wanting to buy a video card hdmi so i could watch internet tv and movies. i have not had any experance with this kind of cardso i need a little help with both the termenoligy as well as what the card can do.i would like the card and i am talking about the PVR to both record from the cable box as well as play internet movies ect.any help would be great.will the pvr do the things i am looking for?thanks for the help and i am sory for the missunderstanding.

You don't buy the cable box, you either call Cox for an upgrade or take the box down to Cox and turn it in for a DVR upgrade. I have no idea about your other questions. You can use the HD-PVR with the cable box that you have but I don't know how to schedule your recordings. With the cable box upgrade, you just record to the built in HDD and either run S-Video or composite cables to a video capture card or run component cables to the HD-PVR and a USB cable from the HD-PVR to the PC.
