"opinionated experts?", a better description is "weirdos!". They camp here all day, reply to everything often with sarcastic quips, lord it over everyone, claim to know-it-all, mess up any logical ON-TOPIC train of thought, are persistently argumentative rather than helpful, and trash most of the threads - like this one. I'm very sorry Angie and other newbies with legitimate questions must encounter it.

I am certainly not taking sides, I know better than to get in the middle of a pissing contest.
Most people here are pretty knowledgeable, but some are very opinionated and give no quarter, turning everything into an argument. Here is where I shut up because ...
I love children, girl children... about 16-40

Guys, listen, this has been amusing, interesting, heartwarming and most of all VERY helpful. It's nice to know I have a place to come and get help when needed. Maybe there was a bit of clashing here 'n there, but everyone's intentions were to help rather than telling me how DUMB I am. I agree, you're all very knowledgable and shouldn't be arguing with or one-upping each other, you're all so willing to help and consider you're all on the same "side." (wonder if there are any women here???) At least you're all sitting in front of computers offering what you know rather than chasing some old lady to grab her purse. Next time, just tell me what you know, in simple terms, let me print it out, sort it out and use it... and be nice.
Love ya all for all the time you took for my DVD problem !!! -
Something tells me that this thread wouldn't be quite so long if the OP was named BillyRedbeard rather than Angie.
-
Nope. I did the CloneDVD2 (easy), but I got this message: "missing VOB file(s) named VTS_01_*.VOB .... Please be sure that all IFO and VOB files of the source DVD are available for loading."
I copied the file from my desktop folder into CLone DVD and that's what I got. What am I doing wrong? This file is huge, too big for one DVD anyway... that's why I was asking about shrinking it. -
Why the need for a putdown, Supreme2K ??? Who taught you what you know and how long did it take? We all have to start somewhere. I am not a DUMB woman, it's just that this is new to me. Think back to when you first started something, anything, and needed someone to teach you. The thread is long because of comments like yours.

(Try to ignore the noise...
)
I don't know much about CloneDVD, only used it rarely in the distant past. But if it doesn't work as claimed, then there could be something wrong with the movie folder/files.
Will the movie play on your computer? That's a good test of whether it is intact and workable. Another test would be to try to open it with DVD Shrink which includes a rudimentary DVD player. If it loads and plays OK, then it should be OK.
Another possibility is that there are many different kinds of movie formats, and we haven't yet established exactly what kind you have. It would help if you will open the movie folders with Windows Explorer and list some of the file types it contains. For example it could be in .avi format. Or it could be in DVD movie format which has a VIDEO_TS folder containing files of the type .vob .ifo .bup. Or it could be something else. What kind of movie format do you have? -

Nobody cares how you see it. Let's can the noise so the topic at hand can be addressed.

JB, you've just proven my point, which hech54 explained.
It seems that you're pretty much the only "noise" in this thread.
I suggest you view the "Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society" episode of South Park. It should be very enlightening for you. -
Ooops! I just tried to rip(?) a movie with AnyDVD to my desktop three times, but it got to 97%, then aborted it each time. (Don't know how to send this image properly)
[Attachment 893 - Click to enlarge] Then I went to use Any DVD again, the one I downloaded from a link in this forum, and it said my trial has expired.... what am I doing wrong... in case at least one of you aren't fed up with this thread by now. -
Angie, here's what works for me 99% of the time for backups:
o I check the size of the original disc before starting the process to determine whether or not it will fit on a single-layer disc.
o Rip the disc to hard drive using DVDFab HDDecrypter (freeware). (If it's a very recent disc, the freeware version, which the author has decided to update to the newer encryptions after a delay from first issue, may not work for awhile. I wait.)
o If the resulting size fits on a single-layer disc, burn with Imgburn.
o If the resulting disc is too large to fit on a single-layer disc, shrink using DVDShrink, which will do it automatically. (Double-layer discs are so much more expensive than SL discs, I just never considered them to be cost-effective, so I don't use them.)
o Burn to disc with Imgburn.
Never had to use anything else. For that other 1%, nothing seemed to work and I just didn't make a backup.
When I was a newbie, I created my fair share of unusable "coasters" as a not-unexpected part of the learning curve. My "99% solution" above was the result of learning curve lessons learned the hard way.
Good luck! -
Thanks... I'm off to try your links and suggestions. Hope I can come back if I run into a glitch. Honestly, I've never had so many problems trying to do something that supposedly is SO simple.
-
Thanks, CobraP... your link to DVD Fab worked just fine... movie's all copied. I haven't tried other solutions in this thread yet, just haven't had time. Got stuck tonight on a simple copy and took the most recent suggestion in my emails. Thanks a lot!
And again, thanks to everyone here, I now have an excellent file folder that answers all my questions and more. Special thanks to all who went to SO much trouble to mail me all those long step-by-steps, both here and directly to my emails. I got a LOT more than what I'd hoped for.
Love all you guys, and I'm sorry if I misinterpreted Supreme2K's comment, my apology to him. -
