not sure if this is the right area or not

i learn new songs to play for different bands by playing onto to their songs on ipod. most songs are loud enough ( i use closed ear muffs with headsphones in them designed for drummers + ear plugs so i dont get hearing damage from both headphones and drums).
Yes the headphones would be louder without ear plugs but so would the drums so i would be worse off.
I need to be able to make some of the lower level songs louder somehow.
I have read a somewhere about a program that will do it but it costs.. Anyone know of a free program?
Even if it were just a little bit it would help. It sux when the recording is significantly quieter than the average song.

    Thank you

Depending on the source format, MPEG Streamclip will permit you to make "adjustments" that include normalizing and/or boosting the volume.

    edit: Also Audacity
