I see the instructions for converting VOB subtitles to SRT, correcting the OCR, then converting SRT to permanent. I have no interest in creating an interim text format. Is there any program that can read a VOB and write out an MPG2 with the same subtitles hardcoded, without converting them to text first?

Can't any of those all-in-one dvd converters do that. Like FAVC, avs2dvd, the filmmachine, etc. Load the dvd and output a mpeg2/vob with burned in subs. And you probably need the ifo files for the vob files.

Do you have personal experience? None of those products list that as a feature.

I'm not sure about outputting as a mpg (any reason why it has to be an mpg(2)) but handbrake will allow you to rip straight from the disc and will hard encode the DVD subs (IDX/SUB) or CC subs while compressing the video.
