    Hey all,

Recently, after a Windows Update, when trying to play any video file (audio files still play), the following error message pops-up:

Media Player Classic has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
    Windows will close the
program and notify you if a solution is available.

After googling, it seems as though this link covers it:
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/1fef32f1-07b2-45fd-b273-e2665a05fda2

After more googling, it seems the only solution is to upgrade to Media Player Classic Home Cinema.

I'm wondering what is the best way to go about removing all traces of the previous version of MPC (Version: 6.4.9.1) and anything related before downloading the latest version MPC-HC to avoid any potential conflicts?

    Any info/advice is appreciated.

How did you install MPC? Work backwards from that point. MPC-HC is a better player--better than any other player that I have tried.

    Thanks for the reply luigi2000.

I installed MPC as part of an installation of the K-Lite Codec Pack(Full).
After more googling, there seems to be at least two ways(maybe more?) to go about the uninstall. One is to use the K-lite Codec Pack uninstall(in the Start Menu). I'm not sure if that will uninstall both the codecs and the MPC.
Then, there's the instructions on this page:
    http://www.ehow.com/how_5097856_remove-media-player-classic.html
I'm not sure if those instructions will remove the codecs or just the player.

Either way, will MPC-HC include all the codecs(as part of the install) that were included with MPC/K-Lite Codec Pack?

  4. I thought K-Lite already uses MPC-HC? At least, the version I installed on a PC over a year ago did. So you can uninstall K-Lite completely and install a new version.

    I use CCCP+CoreAVC myself.

This thread brings to mind two questions that I've always had but never think to ask:

    1) With a small, well-behaved all-in-one codec decoder like ffdshow out there, why use codec packs?

    2) What's the difference between MPC and MPC-HC? I know they're two branches of the same tree, but are there clear advantages and disadvantages to each?

    Best,

In most cases, because "Who knew?" It's not like ffdshow gets advertised on the World Cup or
    Superbowl.

Codec packs are like giving chocolate to parrots: I've never seen hard documentation of harm,
But the cautionary anecdotes are so frequent.... better safe than sorry.

Dunno, I use Mplayer / SMplayer myself.

    No, they're not.

K-Lite in particular is simply a unified installer for several standard codecs and utilities. It can reorganise existing codecs, activate and deactivate them as required.

You are given the choice of exactly which codecs are installed and activated.
You'll certainly make a mess if you install every codec pack you come across, as some seem to. Then you have 5 different versions of ffdshow, and so on, all overwriting and screwing each other up.
Just use one and only activate what you actually need and you will be fine.

The basic problem is that Windows doesn't have any unified way of installing codecs, and no built in tools to organise them.

It's like the hardware driver situation in DOS, when you had to install and tune drivers for every single application. There is a "Device Manager" in Windows now, but no "Codec Manager". (Ever tried to use Windows Media Player and had it tell you it needed a codec and would install it for you? And invariably fail.) Microsoft dropped the ball on that, maybe they couldn't see any profit in helping users to play media for free, so they just didn't care. So third party codec organisers sprouted up, and some of them were bad, but some of them have matured and work smoothly.

    Hey all,

    Thanks to all that replied.

Just upgraded to the latest version of the K-Lite Codec Pack(with MPC-HC) and all is working as it was previously.

    Appreciate all the info/advice posted.

CCCP (horrors, a codec pack!!) is basically ffdshow + haali's splitter + vsfilter + MPC-HC. Convenient and largely safe to recommend, IMO.
