I want wmp to use coreavc to decode video (h264) from mp4 and mov files but for some reason I can't get it to work. Though when I open these files with mpc-hc, it rightly uses coreavc to decode the video. I checked these files with graphstudio and it shows that coreavc is set to be used but oddly wmp never uses it. If, however, I rename the file with the extension .mkv, coreavc will be launched in wmp. Obviously, this isn't a very good solution to my problem. I was wondering if anyone knows what's going on here. The reason I want to use coreavc and wmp is because it delivers the smoothest playback for all of my HD content compared to mpc-hc and vlc.

I am using Windows 7 32bit Enterprise, Shark007 codec pack, and coreavc. I was testing it with various movie trailers from hd-trailers.net

I was messing with this one in particular. This trailer stutters throughout when I play it in wmp. But if I changed the extension to mkv, it plays perfectly with coreavc/wmp.

    Any help is appreciated.

If I am not mistaken, WMP in Windows 7, by default, is forced to use a different codec for playing H264 in MP4 files. Take a look at this Doom9 thread:

P.S.: The AVC decoder from DivX is faster, better, and also, free.

Thanks for the link, got it working now. I'll give the DivX decoder a whirl for comparison. Thanks for your help!
