It depends of course what video codec, settings you use. It might be be possible to use avidemux to multiplex the mkv to avi without any conversion and then it will be very fast. But I guess you want to convert the mkv to avi xvid?

I use Format Factory & it takes about 30 minutes in DIVX & about 40 minutes in XVID. Make sure you use the same settings as the original & the results will look the same as the original.

The one of the fastest computer

Encoding is a CPU intensive task. While there are some differences between encoders, as a general rule, any encoder that is substantially faster than the rest is cutting corners somewhere, and that usually manifests itself in the area of quality. If you want faster, find the best quality encoder and put it on faster hardware.

Learn about remuxing. You'll find it very useful and a time saver!
On most cases, only the audio may need re-encoding, the video stays as is. And that is the fastest you can go.

Personally, I don't trust avidemux for changing containers direct. Feed avidemux with seperated video / audio files and then yes, it always works. IMO it can be a great muxer, but not remuxer.
