  1. Hi All,

I have a couple DVD's that have no chapter points. Is there a free (preferably), or cheap, program available for creating chapter points without re-encoding the video? What do you guys recommend for this?

    TIA

    Hi bbanderic,

to create chapters you need compliant streams and an authoring programme to insert chapters either at given intervals or alternatively at the exact timestamp position you want them to be. Re-encoding is not needed, as long as the DVDs are working as they are now....

There are numerous guides on authoring around here as well as a number of free apps able to do that. A nice and simple way to author elementary streams (you would have to demux the DVD-VOB-files first) is DVDAuthorgui, if you already have an idea what authoring is all about.

Better still and especially nicer to use, if you're new to the whole thing, is TMPGEnc DVD Author, but it's not free (trial available though).

I am told that it might be possible to add chapters to an already authored DVD with pgcedit, but I never troubled to find out. It has got a steep learning curve.

For demuxing you may use DGIndex or PGCdemux - the latter only, if DVD is already on your harddrive.

Well, have a look at the 'Guides' and 'Tools'-sections of this site - and have fun!

TMPEG DVD author will do what you want. See if you can find an version,1.5 or 1.6,they have a very easy to use chapter adding feature. I've used it to do exactly what you want to do.
