Buying a Mac would end the IE problem, but unfortunately there are many programs and hardwares that don't support Mac and require Windows and IE to work whether we like it or not. By far the less expensive and more sensible solution is the one I took years ago. Reinstall Windows to fix the problem, make a boot CD of Ghost, Seagate DiscWizard or other imaging program to create an image of a properly functioning system. Then I only have to restore that image when such problems arise or worse problems like failure to boot to Windows, and restoring the image takes only 10 minutes or so depending on image size.

Assuming you have Firefox installed, install the IETabs add-on and use that. Don't run IE6 as administrator.

Thread is old ... but what is the size of the installer your attempting to run ?

Around 80mbs from oldapps is full install.

  6. BJs gave you the solution. Just to clarify things, the message you see in your picture (IMAG0606) is just a generic error message the installer puts up when it encounters a certain type of problem; programmers try to prepare for everything, but sometime unforeseen situations appear.

In your case, the message is about a damaged download location information, more than likely the download location the installer was looking for doesn't exist anymore. Using the full installer instead of the web installer avoids this problem.

Dude, IE 6 is really old. Anything that requires it to run won't be running that much longer. And it has truly horrible security problems as does your Windows 2000 operating system. Honestly, if you have this box connected to the internet you damn well better have a firewall on it like Zone Alarm or something else or it will literally be minutes before it's hacked. If you don't have a firewall installed and it's already on the internet (it's not protected like by a business firewall but just on a home connection), then it's already been hacked whether you know it or not.

Microsoft usually doesn't make packages as old as ie6sp1 available after this much time. As nic2k4 points out, you will have to find some place on the internet that has the true full installer available and just run that.

  10. Dude i get its old , that is not the point , all my computer are windows 7 xp and 8
i need to install a software for a touch screen back office computer that use the old windows 2000
i know that ie6 sp1 was the last version made for windows 2000
i just format the hard drive and install windows 2000 updated to sp4
so to run that software i need ie6 sp1 and give me the error on the picture
    ie5.5 install and work perfect
    what am i doing wrong????

  11. If you did a clean install of W2K then you shouldn't be having any problems with IE6. Download another copy of IE6 from filehippo or oldapps. There is a 64 bit version of IE6 that WILL NOT RUN on W2K. Maybe you just have the wrong version.

Or try a Linux OS with WINE. They run IE6 and most apps that W2K would.

I don't get why your app can't run in XP. And earlier you said if you wanted to surf you could use another machine so by your own admission your app is not dependent on IE6 so why not use opera on this machine?

Now I read that your app requires IE6. Which is it?

IE6 will run on XP, 7

Because the program is now probably abandonware. Whoever wrote either went out of business and there are no more versions or his company is simply too cheap to pay for a new version. I've seen this before. Usually it's a money thing and there really are alternatives, they just don't want to pay for them when the old software is already paid for and does what they want. Development on this program, whatever it is, seems to have stopped after Win 2000 came out. Microsoft always makes enough changes in each new version of Windows that it completely breaks some old programs that worked in the previous version of Windows.

I feel that maintaining a dependence of Win 2000 and IE 6 is foolish from a security standpoint, but it's not my company or problem to deal with.

As I said before, Bjs gave you the solution. I guess you didn't realize that this is a web link (the underlined text). It's a bit confusing as with most other web pages links are blue colored (then turn magenta once clicked). That said, the link in Bjs' post brings you to the download page for the full version of IE6 (some 77Mb long).

As for running your old program in XP, have you tried compatibility mode? It allows you to fool the program into thinking it's running on Win2k. Right click the program's installer, click properties, click the compatibility tab...
