  1. @ letmeinforgodsake: I maintain that the Circuit City Divx players (as in Divx rental discs) CANNOT play DivX;-) (as in the MPEG-4 codec) video discs. You claimed (or at least it looked like it) before that they can with a modification. If you can find a link to justify your claim then please do.

As for firmware, this is just software. Just because you can update the firmware doesn't mean you can get it to play anything. It depends greatly on the hardware as well. No Divx player (Circuit City) has hardware MPEG-4 decoding (such chips did not exist then) and thus for them to be able to play DivX;-) video (MPEG-4), they must do it in software. I am pretty certain that such a consumer device does not have the computing power to decode DivX in real-time. As an analogy, I can update the software on my old 386 PC as well, but it doesn't mean that I can play DivX on that computer.

    Regards.

  2. rofl, i love know it alls who have no idea what they're talking about. they're 2 wrapped up in proving how great and smart they are that they won't even listen to anything anyone says...this post has about 10 needless posts that were all someone arguing about something they obviously have no clue about. what's the saying jack of all trades, master of none.

sorry know that this is useless too, but i can't stand cocky know-it-alls!

oh and one more thing. there will never be a divx hardware player. microsoft/mpaa will never allow it. if the opensource divx takes off, maybe there will be. but at this point there is no major corprate sponser (and that's what's needed to make an industry change). Any divx player you see is just a pc in a small box. and even if someone did make one in their basement, it would never be allowed to go mainstream, or be of an 1/2 way decent quality. They'd be shut down within a day!
