  1. I am using Premiere as editor on 1920x1080 30i source. Want to export DVD for my parents. There is a widescreen (720x480, 16:9) option in Adobe Media Encoder.

What's the best practice in producing DVD from HD source?

How does hardware DVD player play back widescreen DVD on HDTV? Does it stretch the video to fit the width?

    Thanks!

It doesn't need to stretch it, as the shape of a widescreen TV and the shape of a widescreen DVD are the same - 16:9

I've had some luck (finally!) with AVStoDVD ouputing to "DVD Folder Structure" after processing with ClownBD. I'll try from BDRebuilder to see how that works soon. I tried several other programs with varying success but they all want to further compress to approx. 2gb. AVStoDVD gave me a very nice quality 4.3gb that has standard DVD files that play fine on my standalone DVD player. It uses Quenc or HCenc for the encoding (I like HCenc, similiar quality but faster encode).

Ideally you would go from AVCHD _x1080i 16:9 to 720x480i (wide) for DVD.

Premiere CS4 will import AVCHD and edit as an AVCHD 1080i project. Then you can downsize to 720x480i internally (not so good) or externally with avisynth. Then you encode 720x480i MPeg2 and author your DVD.

    Alternate methods,

    2. Cineform digital intermediate format (faster and better resize).
    3. Smart bob deinterlace to 1080p/59.94 (best done externally).
    4. Import AVCHD to a 720x480i project (quick and dirty).
    5. Premiere deinterlace to 1080p/29.97 (quick and jerky).
