I haven't encoded in years and even then i did it in a 32bit os. I have windows 7 64bit now and was wondering what codec pack i should get to be able to encode a video file.
Also, i have a ts file i got from a video capture. Can i use sony vegas to make a dvd out of it or is vegas for something completely different? Any help is appreciated.

No codec packs. There are no good codec packs. As for 64bit codecs, I will let someone running the 64bit version of W7 answer that in more detail (no codec packs).
You can use Vegas to produce the files required for authoring, but you still require an authoring tool to create the DVD. If you don't need to do any editing then you can use something like AVS2DVD to encode and author for you.Read my blog here.

As a general rule (someone will correct me, if I'm wrong), 64-bit encoders and players will expect 64-bit codecs, while 32-bit players and encoders will expect 32-bit codecs.
However, most encoders (especially those that depend on the installed codecs and filters) are still 32-bit. Offhand, VirtualDub is the only one I know that maintains a 64-bit version (in addition to the 32-bit versions). For a start, you might install ffdshow - they have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, and both versions can in fact coexist on a 64-bit system (they do on mine). If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
I agree with Ai Haibara. 32 bit programs require 32 bit codecs. 64 bit programs require 64 bit codecs. They are two separate systems under 64 bit Windows.

No you dont. On 1 of my drives I have win7 home premium 64bit and you can bung almost any 32bit codec pac on it.I use K-lites codec pack number 570 and I can playback/encode all my video content.Using all the old apps like dvdshrink dvdfab etc...
Ive found out that the reason you can do this is a set of drivers call WOW64 which allows most 32bit apps to work in a 64bit os.
Hope this helps you -
