What you have right now is as "lossless" as you are going to get. Compression = Quality Loss....so don't delete the original file until you are certain.
That is an hour and a half video so I would convert to standard MPEG2 DVD first....burn that to a DVD for safe-keeping.
Then take a small portion of the original file and compress with h246 or Xvid or Divx and test them in your HDD player to see which one looks best...and also compare it to the DVD quality as well.

For MPEG4(Xvid, Divx) I use AviDemux. For h264 I use VirtualDub.....just personal preference.
If you are talking about converting your original uncompressed AVI file to....something...then deleting
the original uncompressed AVI file...I personally would pick DVD first....burning it to a DVD...then do whatever
else you want to the original. Convert it to BOTH Xvid/Divx and h264 and save them as data on either a CD or DVD.

  5. Your source is DV AVI. DV a lightly compressed format used by digital camcorders. It probably contains interlaced video so you're best off converting it to interlaced MPEG 2. And if you do that you might as well make it with DVD compatible settings so you have the option of burning to DVD (as well as playing in the WDTV) in the future.

If you really must have smaller files use h.264 (interlaced) and TS or MKV containers. You can use MeGUI or Xvid4PSP.
