Hello, I cannot get a straight answer, so I figure I have to come to the video experts!
I have converted all my songs over 600 of them) into AVI format thru' Need4Video software. I play them all thru' VLC software. This works really well for me.
They are Karaoke songs ( graphics and music - NO imbedded vocals ). I want to sing these songs in MY vocal key BUT I STILL NEED TO READ THE WORDS on the screen. I have seen lots of audio key changing programmes, but cannot find one that supports AVI files ?

    Thank you
    Alexis

Probably a long shot, but Audacity can do the pitch changes. But that would involve computer processing the audio, then adding it back with the video. I'm guessing you want to do this in real time, during playback?

    And welcome to our forums.

Why not change the key before converting to AVI?
In what format are your original files?

  4. KMPlayer has pitch bending but it uses a slider. It's not half-tone based. So it will be hard to get the exact pitch you want.

Many audio card's have the ability to change pitch. Look through your audio controls. Here's the control dialog from one of my computers:

Name:	pitch.jpg
Views:	7388
Size:	53.1 KB
ID:	577

The control marked by the red box changes the pitch by half-tones and effects any audio being played. Look through Control Panel for audio/karaoke controls.

Thank you so much for your replies.

Gavino: Presently I am downloading from you tube, actual karaoke tracks that peole have posted, so they are in FLV flash stuff. I then convert them to AVI. If I put thru a programme to change pitch before converting to AVI - it will be audio only and I will not have the words, won't it?

Jagabo: I checked my audio controls but have nothing like that unfortunately. This computer is too old I fear. I checked out KMPlayer, but I just don't know enough.

Redwutz: processing audio..... adding back with video..... ooooh! has to be tooooo complicated for little me, I am a
meare woman. I just wanted to "press a button" and it would be alright!

I seem to be in the 'to hard' basket

Not so hard to replace the audio if you are using VirtualDub. (Or probably AVIDemux, though I haven't used it for that.)

I open the video in VD. Then I save out the audio as a WAV with full audio processing. Leave VD open and running.

Open that WAV in Audacity and make your pitch corrections. Save it out in a format that's compliant with your final video format. If that's Xvid, then MP3.

With VD still running in the background, 'Add' your converted audio file and delete the old audio file. Encode the video to Xvid and the new audio will be muxed, or added, with the video during encoding.

I don't know how they add the text to the karaoke files, but if it's part of the video, shouldn't have any affect on the audio.

I use VD Mod for this most times as I like it's audio handling a bit better, but the regular VD would work also with a similar method.

  7. VirtualDub even has a pitch shifter built in. You have to use the advanced audio filters ability. Add the Input filter, the Pitch Shift filter, and the Output filter. Double click on the Pitch Shift filter to set the amount to shift. The value is normalized so setting it to 2.0 increases the shift by an octive, 0.5 decreases by an octave, etc.

I am getting there guys....well, crawling slowly anyway. I have downloaded VD, managed to save audio to WAV, opened it in Audacity - but nothing at all is hi-lighted under EFFECTS (including my change pitch).

Also in VD under AUDIO - advanced filters and filters are also not hi-lighted.
I am obviously doing something wrong.

I have a few karaoke songs in AVI format and needed to alter the pitch. Found this post and, like the original poster, found it all too vague and, dare I say, unhelpful.

Then I stumbled on Quick Time Player. Click 'WINDOW' then click on 'Show A/V Controls'. In the window that appears, you can alter the pitch AND speed of the audio. You can also adjust the colours in the graphics display. AND the graphics and audio always stay in sync.

Now here's the spooky bit; the song I was working on at the time was by The Drifters and it's called 'Some Kind Of Wonderful'.
    Highly appropriate, don't you think?
