You really need to wait more than a hour (try 1 day) before you bump your own post. Nobody gets paid to answer, you know.

I have an iMac via work and I'm not a Mac fanboy. There are things I like and things I don't like. There are fewer choices with Macs. There are usually one or maybe two programs at most on Mac to do anything video related and if they don't work for you, it's just tough. Windows, which really sucks by the way, has a ton of choices. If program X doesn't work under Windows for you, just use program Y or program Z or program A, etc. Note that Macs don't support BluRay and may not ever do so, should you care about it. I think Jobs objects to the licensing agreement.

I use neither Vegas nor Final Cut and I can offer no help with them.

What kind of editing? Input, output, and editing.

Mac is usually the wrong tool, unless you're making indy movies from DV or HDV camera sources.
    Beyond that, forget about it.

Get an Intel I5-750 Processor with 4GB of RAM and 1 TB of disk space. Nvidia GT 220 or ATI 4850 video card. Windows 7 - probably the 32bit version will be good for now. This will be pretty fast and pretty affordable.

Comes down to what you want to do and how much you can spend.

First do you have $3-4k for a suitable Mac for Studio? Or are you talking used?
What are your input formats and export intentions?

    Give us some clues.

I've never understood why people continue to reply with random suggestions.

The suggestions given above are useless when:
    1. He wants something powerful (like SDI captures). Not likely, but still.
    2. He wants simple Youtube uploading from MJPEG video shot off a cheap P&S still camera. Overkill on the suggestions!
    3. He doesn't want to build a computer, would rather buy a pre-made system like Dell or HP.

I can tell edDV sees this too. (Smart guy, pro level.)
A few of you come close, asking for budget, but that's honestly the least important detail right now.
Why don't the rest of you understand this?
    It's a problem -- really, it is.
I see too many people buying crap they don't need, because of threads like this one.
No offense to anybody, but I do think this needs to be said.
Don't turn videohelp into Yahoo Answers, where people just seem to blurt out random advice.

The OP said he wanted a Computer for video editing. He said he could afford a MAC but was open to anything else. Someone suggested building his own computer (which I agree is the way to go) so I put the list that I was looking at up since it will make a pretty good VIDEO EDITING MACHINE.

You are really starting to become an obnoctious jerk that is confrontational with everyone.

I gotta with DarrellS that the OP said he could afford a MAC which is a clue that he is willing to spend at least $1000.00. The suggestion of the HP system I posted is in that range. It wasn't random advice LS....read the OP's first post.

Not really. The conversation should go like this:

Q: What's the best item for XYZ task? ("Best" being a stupid word of course, so you just ignore it.)
A: Minimum needed is item ABC for $500. Better would be DEF for $2,000.

If Q does not have adequate details for A, you ask for more info until you have enough to answer the original Q.
We don't have anywhere near enough info right now. All advice is guessing at random.

If you just asked budget, the conversation goes like this:

    Q. What's the best item for xyz task? I have $200.
A: Nothing, $200 is not enough.

You can see that A doesn't give any info.
At least with the first Q&A model, you have something to save up for, you know what is needed.
With the budget-only approach, you still don't know what to buy.

Ideally, the best Q&A will happen when Q gives both bits of info -- the needs details AND budget.

This is all CRM / marketing type stuff -- I don't expect anybody here to know it.
But I do think the "random answers" approach can be easily spotted, even by a layman.
The worst offenders that I've seen are Yahoo Answers and the techguy.org forums.

You can call me whatever names you want -- but I'm not wrong here.
And I'm not alone, edDV clearly sees this, based on his posts.

Without more info from the OP, the next post may as well read "buy a Dell, dude!"

It's not uncommon for somebody to wonder about an item without knowing its cost. "Oh, I didn't know it was that much, I can't afford that." --- I hear and see/read that all the time. Until you get a number, you cannot assume.

I see the same thing you did.

But again ... waiting on OP.
