Online bandwidth tests tell me i have D/L speeds of anywhere between 4mb to 6mb a sec, yet most youtube videos for me load terribly slow and have been for some time now.

its as if the first 5 sec buffer as if the video will play ultra smooth, and then the video starts buffering for ages.

Any ideas on why this may be happening? all other websites load fine, it seems like video buffering always gets me though.

it may be roadrunner isn't keeping up with the times. hd video can have a bitrate higher than your download speed.

  3. What playback settings are you using in Youtube?
You should set it to automatic:

gooberguy, speed isn't everything, either. Notice your reported 'ping' time is very high. You might want to monitor the speed of the actual download. I suspect the speed drops very quickly from the initial burst. You can try a program like NeoTrace to see what the response times of the different nodes are and see where there might be a problem. below is what I get when accessing YouTube. The access bounces around a lot before getting to the YouTube server, though the time involved isn't too bad. This is a trial version of NeoTrace that works fairly well: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/McAfee-NeoTrace-Professional-Download-42.html
