I'm jumping in here, if you don't mind...
I'm also a confused newbie, and yes, I want to also capture, edit, and burn to VCD or DVD a few dozen old VHS-C tapes recorded from my old 1997 JVC Analog camcorder. I also want to buy a newer HD Flash Camcorder, maybe Canon or Sony that I will also need to capture, edit and burn to play on TV, or computer as well as post on Youtube. I have a VHS copy of our band on the original Gong Show back in 1977 I also want to save on DVD, before all these tapes disintegrate to nothing.

Being a self proclaimed newbie, it's dizzying the amount to devices, software, and opinions to use PCI cards over USB Capture devices. I have nero9, which Vision comes with it, i tried to capture Camcorder footage using an old Pinnacle DAZZLE 80VR usb-rca device to no avail. Did not capture. Would the SIIG Video capture USB device work with any software like the Adobe Premiere?

How many programs do I need to capture, Edit, and Burn?

    1) So first thing I will need is a capture device, either a USB, or PCI. (Analog RCA, Firewire, USB,and S-Video for future HD Camera)
    2) Then I need to Edit, you said, """I like Virtualdub as a format converter but not as an editor."""
    3) Do you have to convert using Virtualdub before you burn?
    4) Is this where the VEGAS MOVIE STUDIO comes in?

    Or something like this....
    Diamond VC600" >
    USB 2.0 Video Standards: NTSC/PAL
    Video capturing formats: MPEG 4/2/1
    NTSC Video Capture:720x480 @30FPS
    PAL Video Capture: 720x576 @25FPS
    Burn support files to DVD/VCD
One touch capture and DVD record and editing software
    Interface: USB 2.0
    Video Standards: NTSC/PAL
Push Button: Pres to start/stop video capturing
Video capturing formats: MPEG 4/2/1 formats
Video Inputs: Composite RCA or S-Video
Still image capturing: JPG or BMP formats
    NTSC Video Capture:720x480 @30FPS
    PAL Video Capture: 720x576 @25FPS
    Burn support files to DVD/VCD

So maybe I should only use the NERO for backing up Data, and burning music CD's and buy something like you mentioned Adobe premiere 7 or 8. or the Vegas Movie Studio.

I also have heard pretty bad reviews for Pinnacles' Customer support and crashing as well as only being able to record two tracks as opposed to Adobe's Premier 99 tracks.

Again, I apologize to jumping in, but this is exactly what I need to find out. Have a Great day!
