in response to the method first proposed in this thread, it doesn't work well. Later on, it was proposed to use kwag's template but still convert to ASF before MPEG. That's complete CRAP. ASF is REALLY bad quality. Not only that, but with kwag's template, I got behind enemy lines, a 100 minute movie, into a little over 500 MB and the quality is AWESOME. So I don't think there is any need to convert to ASF first.

well i guess they're completely ok with the quality, although i completely agree with you. they ought to just try lowering the cq even further. They'll realize that they can now fit 3 hours. woooooo. If the individual is satisfied with that quality, then good for them.

Bud, what device do you use to capture from digital cable?.
I, myself have a 4DTV C-Band receiver, and I capture via S-Video into a Panasonic DMR-E20 to DVD-RAM.
Do you use a capture board, or your cable box has some kind of digital output?. How do you input the video into your PC?..

Sorry, I need to ask a question and since I am a newbie and this topic is in the newbie encoding section I guess it fits.
Kwang, I looked at your folder on Yahoo. That 3rd file is your template? How do I actually use this in TMPGE? Is it as a text file or do I need to enter all that data in someplace? When I think of template I think of something I can load up like Sefy's template.
Sorry, I am a newbie at this and haven't used TMPGE much (use NERO as a converter since it is easy to do).

Hey Bigswaffo what the hell are you talking about
I DID NOT say when using KWAG's template to still CONVERT to asf first.
I did not say that get it right
and I know that on the computer playback asf is not the best quality
BUT im telling you when you convert to mpeg2 it looks exactly like an svcd would when playback on your dvd player
Ive done it a dozen times and have not any problems.
the only reason why i sort of switched to kwag's method is b/c i hate having to encode to svcd it takes to damn long
and kwags vcd looks great at alot less encode time
but when encoding to svcd i will always convert to asf first now

Kwag. I capped off digital cable so the res was pretty good. I agree DVD rip is the best, but for the test I figured it would suffice. I also do the frameserving from virtdub to clean it up. I ran some more tests. For the life of me I still can't get 352x480 to work it's stretched. I don't think APEX or JVC for that matter like it. So I guess I'll stick with 352x240. I'll tink around some more and see if I can mod your template. I like what it does, just the filesize is too big. Maybe I'l d/l 2.53. I'm burning your sample right now. Let you know if anything changes.

What is the running time of "half baked" ?.
Is it full screen or wide screen ???
Not all movies will fit on a single CD. Drama, etc, will fit with space to spare but some action movies close to 2 hours won't ( Like Lethal Weapon 4 ).
If your movie is just so complex that it creates a file way above 820MB, which is about the max that can be overburned on a 80 minute CD, then lower the resolution on the template to 352x240.
Now it'll fit!.

Just got a newbie question here...
I'm going to try the template that Kwag has provided us, but have a question regarding Nero. After you encode using Kwag's template and place the .mpg file into Nero, it asks if you want Nero to re encode the file for you. Should I allow Nero to encode the file itself, or will this mess up the settings that Kwag's template have already created?
By the way, I have an RCA DVD Player, and are there any known problems when playing CD-Rs or CD-RWs in it? It does say it's VCD compatible.
Thanks.

Kwag, I take it this was a widescreen rip. The JVC played fine, some blocks on my 27". No sound skipping either. The APEX, well as someone pointed out earlier, they don't like 24 FPS. video was alittle jumpy. Could you send me your email? I have some other questions that have nothing to do with this thread.

I used KingViper's SVCD Template to convert a 104min movies to fit on a 80min cd. I changed the CBR to 912k, I got this number from the bitrate calc. The movie I used was American Pie 2. The final file size after TMPGenc encoded it was 469MB. I burned it to a cd-rw 650MB disk. Played it on my APEX 660 model. The movie plays great, but when I fast forward and play the movie it is out of sync with the audio. I was wondering why this is happening. Like I said the movies plays great when it start from the beginning and just plays.
Thank you

Hey Kwag I tried doing the method you described, using your template and turning off the compliance with Nero. However, when I burned it onto a 700 MB Memorex CD-RW, my RCA 5215P didn't play it correctly. The sound worked for about 10 seconds, and the image was just a bunch of garbled block like figures. I will try your sample and see if I can make that work, but if you have any ideas why it hasn't worked for me so far I would be happy to know them.

kwag- just give it up!!
Bout 85% of the people who have commented on ur template has problems!
This is xvcd and seein who can and cannot play it? just go to the dvd player compatibility list and read the comments.
I have NEVER and i mean NEVER had 1 person complain about the templates i just recently made and i know how to do it too cuz i release them out to a few people who powerhouse the hell out of em and see if they can ever get anything bad to happen. If anything does happen, i fix em until they are ready to be distributed.
Kwag, u should try my temps since they are ONLY for d2v and avi dvd rips.
SVCD dvd rip temps coming soon........
Also, look forward to vcd temps as well......ShiZZZoN PzN
Everyday is another payday and I am one step closer to becoming the one.

used the tempelate on half baked and got just over a 2 hour film onto CD overburned to the brim!!!!!
Tried it on my mates DVD think its a Panasonic. Looks nice the pictues quite good but it jerks a bit even in low motion screens but i did knock the res to 352/240
try again when i get more CD-rs .
(run out as i had to put about 92 divx and avi on CD for backup took time!!!!!!)

I've gotta be honest I haven't read any of these post, there is 6 pages it would just make me more dumb.
Do any of your guy's have the resapy for a good SVCD from a captured avi, cause I've tryed the one under "how to" and it turned out as S.H.I.T., please help?
Oh yeah I wrote it here (1) there is alot of people (2) I've wrote this at the forum befor but didn't get a reply.

Kwag, I'm giving your template a go now. Unfortunately I no longer have a copy of Platoon that I had been testing out previous templates like Cyberimage26's on. I'm interested to see the final result..... When this has finished encoding shall I mux, remux (non - std vcd) and burn or just burn as a regular vcd ?? Btw I have adjusted your template to the respective PAL settings....

I suggest you read the book "Video Demystified" by Keith Jack.
There is where I learned "a lot" about MPEG, and specially about quantization and GOP structure. And that's how I figured out the GOP 1,15,3,1 or 1,20,3,1 that I have been using and I haven't seen anywhere in this site or in any template.
This was not a "trial and error" experiment, it's plain analysis of the MPEG streams.

I personally use VCDEasy, because it let's me put in the original chapters ( with Chapter Xtractor ), so my xVCD have identical chapters as on the original DVD.
