I agree, Kwag you should have a small guide packaged together on this site. It would be a shame to let others with less successful templates remain the staus quo.

Hi Kwag and everyone!
I would like to mention that I have tried a loooooot of settings in the last 3 days. Well, I feel me dvd player is slightly touchy bit not too bad I think. It really appears also that the Apex dvd players are very touchy from all the posts on their dvd players. I have a Sanyo DWM-470. Just bought it like 3 -4 weeks ago. It is a 3 cd changer.Makes it nice for those 2-3 cd movies
Anyhow, I have came up with some really nice templetes I think anyhow, that work wonderfully on my dvd player. I am pushing for the most as everyone else here is for 1 disk movies.I would like some of you guys to check these out. Here are the settings:
110 minute movie, Don't say a word,
Mpeg 1 544x480 4:3 525(ntcs) 23.976 fps CQ 54 2300 max 550 min(which 500 seems to be the very minimum for my player so for you apex and other touchy dvd player owners this is the setting for ya!500 minimum at least! and it don't skip or audio don't lag or nothing
This was from using kwags templete which made my dvd player skip and audio lag) My dvd player isn't suppose to play svcds or any non standard vcds but it does
Havn't tried pals, it isn't suppose to play those either..lol Took me a long time to get these settings. And this is for a longer movie at 110 minutes as "don't say a word" is. So shorter movies you can get the CQ level up to like 70 and 80 but as like kwag said earlier seems as if above 80 you really can't notice the difference at least on my comp and my 27" tv. This all fits onto 1 cd. I was just wondering if i changed the mpeg1 to 2 would that change the file size or anything really? I never have messed with that yet.
Now to finish the reast of the settings. sorry..lol enable padding 0 20 now to advanced which of cource this mainly can change according to your source file
but here it goes, non-interlace bottom field 4:3 525(ntcs) full screen keep. Now gop structure, 1 20 3 1 (sound familiar guys..lol like i said, this was from kwags templete from the begining)
also detect scene. Now the quantize matrix, no motion. Audio layer II 44100 stereo 224 (since 224 is the vcd standard anyhow). Well I also have some additional settings for more tweeking for shorter then 110 minute movies here they are, under advanced go to sharper edge, and then make them both 100 and enable field and enable filter, this will help some, believe me you can see the difference.
But it does make the file larger so that's why you use this setting only on shorter then 100-110 minute films.
Does anyone here know what the floating dct is all about? Seems like it doesn't really do jack. LOL Also, what is the difference in audio layer I and II, stereo and mono maybe? Never dealt with I before. LOL
Well, I sure hope this setting helps someone here. Cause I know this is my best setting so far for this movie anyhow.
And also Kwag, If this looks to be a good setting will you put it on your sight there for download. I can send ya the templete but I am sure you can do it yourself but just in case you rather me send it to ya let me know. By the way if anyone wants this templete for a try message me Do not email me cause I hardly ever read the email from the address. I have one that i use all the time so if you need that one let me know ill give it to ya. Also, I have tons of DVD ripped movies let me know if you are interested in them. Can do like direct downloads with highband connection if you want anyhting.Mark

I would also like to add. On other pixel sizes such as 352x480(kwag) and 352 288(kwag) and 480x480(slightly stretched) it stretches the movie horizontally some so that is why I had to go to the higher vertical setting of 544.
Now the standard setting of vcd works nicely but like I said I am trying to achive the best for 1 cd. And this seems to be the very best and barely fits on 1 cd..lol

Hi ZeppelinFan,
Could you open your template in notepad, then cut and paste the contents into this thread. This way we won't have to keep hassling you everytime one of us wants to try it.
I am also having stretching problem of the video, I would like to have a go at your template to see how it works for me.
Cheers,
Reg.

Hi ZeppelinFan:
You found something that I hadn't tried!. The min of 500Kbps for the Apex models! Great
About "Don't say a word", I did that a little over a week ago with the standard template and I also fit the whole movie but I believe I did it with a CQ of 75, and I didn't have to do a lower CQ, because as I said in a earlier post the quality with a CQ below 70 starts to degrade very rapidly and the video becomes very unstable.
Could you try a small clip again with the template as default settings, but just change the MIN from 300 to 500 and see if it plays in your Apex without jumps and skips?.
Thanks,

First a question, should I change your default of 352x480 to 352x240? I am using DV AVI as the source film.
I just ried to do The Longest Yard which ran 2 Hours and 2 Min, the resulting file was just over 1GB so two much for one CD. Without changing the quality from 70 to somethin below that is there something else I should be looking at? Or is the movie just to long? The only thing I changed was the default from 352x480 to 352x240 VCD Standard NTSC, also set it for 1:1 VGA .
So far anything below 2 Hours works great. Many thanks.

And open your avi file with this program.
Play with it for a while until you feel comfortable.
Set your output on this program to billinear resize at 352x480 and generate the .avs file. Also check the "Do denoise? " to do some filtering on your avi file.
Now open the .avs file with TMPEG and then load the template.
Keep your CQ at 70 and try again. Let me know your results.
If your movie still doesn't fitthen re-run AVSGen and select billinear resize again but change to 352x240.
Change the template output from 352x480 to 352x240 and now it should fit!. That's what I had to do for "The mummy returns".

ok kwag i tried your template on a 8 min divx file...it looks good and the file size was reduced to almost half of a standard vcd template i tried of the same divx file..the standard mpeg1 came out to 82 megs and the one with your template came out to 42 megs..my only problem is that i use videopack 5 to burn my vcd's and when i dropped the 42 meg file into vid pack it read it as the same size as the standard one i did...do u or anyone else know why it shows up like that?

So it fitted perfectly on one CD-R.
I had to encode it at 352x240, but all the other parameters were left the same.
CQ=70, GOP struct 1,20,3,1, audio 128khz, etc.
Just changed the AviSynth script to resize the DVD2AVI .d2v project to 352x240 and changed the output on the template to 352x240. That's it.
At 352x480 it was always around 900MB, perfect for a 90 minute CD-R, but I don't have one on hand!.
Even at 352x240, there are hardly any blocks on the high action scenes, because of the MAX value of 2,300 for bitrate.
I had tried this before with the standard TMPEG VCD template at CBR 1,150 doing the first 2 minutes of the movie, the part of the fight, and you couldn't see any detail because the whole screen was full of unaligned macroblocks.
The quality is just like a good VCD with the benefit of barely any blocks on fast scenes. Although not as sharp as with the 352x480 output, which is twice the resolution, but what the hell. It fits!.

For Kwag:
Kwag, forgive the dumbness if this has been covered over and over. Being New, I thought I'd do another Simpsons episode to cut my teeth, before attempting a movie.
Knowing that it'll fit, I wasn't concerned about fine details.
I opened TMPEGen closed the wizard pop up box.
browsed to select the episode
hit load and selected your template
hit load and selected unlock template
hit start, and it began decoding.
I notice the picture shape changed in the window, and it looke like it would fit on a wide screen TV.
I stopped it and tested the clip with WMP, seemed fine.
I let it go through the process.. it finished.
I opened Nero and tried to burn the cd, but it came up with "unexpected file format"
I opened VCDEasy (read it in one of your posts) and it said, file format innappropriate for NTSC "film". (or something to that effect)
Where did I mess up? I didn't tweak the template. Used it verbatim.
The source file was:
56 mb
352 x 240
29 fps
46kbps
24 bit
DIVXMPEG$ V3
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllppp!!!!!!!! !!! a newbie

Also you first load your file and then you load the template. The other way aroung you screw up the TMPEG parameters because they are overwritten when you load your divx or avi.
Always load your template LAST and then make adjustments in TMPEG before you start encoding.KVCD.Net - Advanced Video Conversion

This is the basic setting for vcd 544x480 23fps cq56 4:3 wource and 4:3 output 1 5 2 1 for the gop. And I am not for sure how much tweeking there can be yet will let ya know soon.
I have some other templetes as well. The thing is for my dvd player and 27" t.v., If I used the 352x240 standard vcd setting, it just makes the pic about 1/3 of the screen, and to me that basicly sux...lol So that is why I went to the 544 setting it covers about 3/4 of the screen. Which to me that is exceptable to watch. Of course you lose some quality but not enough to worry about. It is at least vhs quality if not better. Well, try it out and see if it works and if you want more templetes let me know.
These are all (ntsc) my dvd player isn't suppose to do pal but never have tried it yet. LOL But then again it isn't suppose to do non standard vcd or NO svcds lol but they were wrong on both parts there to a degree...lol
Well, let us know if it works and how well and if you changed anything. Like I said I have a few more templetes that are similar that works also.Mark

I tried 544x240 and it was funny, the movie was at the upper left hand corner of my tv screen. LOL
So, I know I can't use that setting at all. And also, the 352x288 setting, all my screen shows is a rolling black screen with only the white time of the movie letters/#'s there no movie at all! lol So, I know I can't use that setting at all either. That was the worst scenerio so far. Well, I will let you guys know more as I do my trial and errors here and maybe Kwag here can post that templete up. Just try it guys, It is pretty nice and you get most of your tv screen too! LOL

Some test results. Just completed K-Pax (121 Min) off DVD came out perfect. Also ran Training Day (122 Min) Off DVD again came out perfect. My only problem with your template is when I try to do Captured files either MPEG or AVI, I tried your suggestion on the AVSGEn, but can't get the progrm to run on my system (WIN2000 Pro). When I do a Capture with MMC 7.6 MPEG-1 Standard VCD, it plays back perfect, I can split it with TMPGEnc and burn with NERO no problem, just can not get it small with your template. The DV AVI file (720x480) will run through TMPGEnc with no problems on the standard templates, with your template can't seem to get it samller, the only thing I cahnged is taken it from 23 to 29.97. I tried thsi with The Longest Yard, just can't get it. Some help if possible. The Original DVD's work perfect............and play perfect, I watch these on a Sony 61" TV and it's great on One CD........

When you're capturing at 29.97, but your source original is 23.976 FILM but it's being played back at 29.97, then you have to do IVTC ( Inverse Telecine ).
This is an advanced topic, so I suggest to look in the "Advanced Conversion" forum here on vcdhelp.

Many thanks...will look into it (Inverse Telecine) ...I am doing all the Captures from a Digital Cable System, I do not capture from VHS tapes, I was think that if I run the file back through the DeMux/Ux with TMPGEnc with the TMPGEnc Video-CD setting, maybe that will set it up for use with your Template, will try this and report back....again many thanks..........

Also you must capture at least at 352x480 so that you get both fields.
Here's one of the most important part from the article in the site I mentioned above:
"Compressing an interlaced video source is a waste of space. Thus, something has to be done. Besides that, you would save 29.97 frames per second of a video that was made at 24 frames per second. That is 25% of completely useless data, because those extra 6 frames per second were not in the original movie!"
So there's where IVTC comes into play to fix things!.

Hi Kwag, Need helps, I can't make your template works with my *.avi files as your samples are so good and ideal for VCD. So I think may be my source is not right???
I am back up some old home video VHS (not V8) tapes RCA jack) feed through a dazzle bridge holywood (AtoD mode) output to DV and hook up to my firewire 1394 in computer. I captured it with 720x480 @29.97 fsp & 44kHz sound, then using your template NTSC (unmodify) to convert through Tmpegenc v2.5 and the result is 1min sample = 10.8MB and the quality is not good. Am I do something wrong??? is my source OK. The avi file play good on computer but not the mpg file. What is the recommend for my captured file 352x480 @23.97 & 44KHz sound ?????Thanks for your help
