I downloaded the templet on that site and tested it with a 5 min high action clip. But first i changed the size down to 352x288 from 352x576. The results were great. They looked very good on my 17" moniter and looked quite good on a 32" phillips widescreen. However everybody should note:
*DOWNLOAD THE TEMPLET ON THAT SITE, THE PREVIOUS ONE DIDN'T WORK!*
The previous one that was on the other site with the size already at 352x288 was fucked up, it didn't work. Simply download the new templet at 352x576 and change the resouloution. You will be amazed by the results!

Yes.
Forget the old yahoo briefcase site. I'll be deleting it in a few moments.
The new site is http://shidima.com/kwag

Maybe it's because your DVD is a series, and not a regular movie DVD. Like the Stargate series DVD's on NTSC, I think they are also coded at 29.97 and not FILM.
Have you tried a regular PAL movie?

Now I know what happened bilbogod.
I burned your farscape to CD-RW, and I played it in my Panasonic portable, and there it did jump about every second. But I tested the same CD-RW on my JVC player and it played perfectly.
So I guess it could be the media or my portable player that doesn't like 25 FPS.
I'll make some more tests later on other regular media.

Someone please help me! What template/settings should I use for playing back on Apex AD-1500?
I am lost. I guess it doesn't like kwag's template with the vbr... Anyone experienced out there, what are you using for the APEX?
I need good quality in less than 4 CDs...
Thanks,

Hell I did!. This template was my best excuse to get rid of my old Apex AD-600ASo I went to the store with my xVCD sample and I tested different models to be sure they would play before I bought it. To my surprise, almost every model played. The Samsungs' bombed, every Panasonic I tried worked, most Sonys', JVC, Pioneer's played fine.
I figure that it's cheaper to have a DVD player that can play my 50+ single CD movies with full original chapter points and VCD++ quality ( hey, that sounds like a good name for the format! VCD++ ), than having a DVD player that I have to swap 2 standard VCD per movie and playback at a lower VCD quality!.
Just the way I think. 8)

actually the first template that kwag posted up here worked better than the others. i'm doing PAL and when i used the new template, the noise came back. with the old, the quality was a lot better and the filesize was smaller. i looked around and in the GOP structure, you changed it from 20 to 15. i thought that might be the reason. anyway, those are my results.

I'll fix that temps tonight.
And yes it makes a big difference from 15 to 20 in final file size.
Thanks again,

hey KWag,
Was just curious here. I am getting slightly cunfused here with these templetes. I downloaded the first one with the 1 20 3 1 settings. Now you have this new one which says it is a ntscfilm setting? now no one uses that anymore, so why would you have a templete of this for? Just seems weird to see this. Is this suppose to be a great templete above your other one? And also, the message you sent me about the settings, well vcdeasy burner says that 352x480 and 480x480 are both non film mpegs? Now am i suppose to turn off the "analyze mpeg files" or turn off "perform some mpeg compliace checks"? I didn't have to on this 1st movie i just burnt today(which was my very fisrt one by the way)and it works. But it is a 3 disk svcd of don't say a word. . I am assuming it is the 2nd one to turn off since it is your templete i am using and it isn't a standard compliace film. And another thing lol, in the tmpg advanced tab why is it in the video arrange method under it it always saying (greyed) 320x240 pixels? what does this mean and why can't we change this setting?

This is because the resolution of 352x480 is non-standard. However, if you change the output of the template in TMPEG to 352x240, you can turn back ON the "perform some mpeg compliace checks". But I just leave this OFF all the time.
As for the grayed 320x240, you could change that by selecting center ( custom size ) in the Video Arrange Method. This would depend on your source.
The input source is something everyone will have to play with, and change, depending on what source is being fed to TMPEG.
As for "Don't say a word" movie, I did that last week and came out excelent on a single CD-R with all original chapters on it

What adjustments, if any, would I have to make to the original Kwag Template by bringing in a DV Avi Captured file? The current setting is via Adobe Premiere 6.0, Hollywood Bridge, set at the standard DV Avi of 720x480. Now the second question is what about a VirtualDub Capture set at 352x480m no compression? If anyone has a recommendation on a better AVI setting please let me know. Keeping in mind my end result would be a single CD for a quality VCD. The source for all this is a Digital Cable system via Firewire 1.5Ghz, 256Ram.

yeah, hate to gloat but PAL efforts with the template seem to be noticeably better. Its a kinda twisted irony, that U.K. people get short changed on their region2's as compared to the extras laden region 1's. But the quality is higher on ours. Oh well, I suppose you cant have it both ways.

Second question:
Capture with VirtualDub at 352x480 with the Huffy codec to save space. Then load the template, and adjust input source in TMPEG to get your correct output aspect ratio.

Bilbogod,
I am a relative newbie and have been keeping an eye on this thread for a quite a while now.
I have a Pioneer DV 535 and it is not able to play VCD's produced by Kwag's template; the picture only occupies the left half of the screen.
I know that you can burn MPEG1 streams as SVCD so I have been trying that with some success. My first attempts on a wide screen movie produced video that was the correct width but was way too short in height. I have tried all PAL combinations of Aspect Ratio, Source Aspect Ratio and Video Arrange Method to determine that for me, an Aspect Ratio of 4:3 625 Line PAL, Source Aspect Ratio of 4:3 625 Line PAL and Video Arrange Method of Custom 352 x 430 burnt as an SVCD works. With this method I retain the excellent quality but the file size grows (I expected this!), I can only fit around 95 mins on to an 80 min CD.
Whilst performing all of these tests I have been burning them as VCD and SVCD. The VCD disks were always the same, the video only occupied the left half of the screen and the SVCD's worked fine. Yesterday I noticed that your PAL template was available from Kwag's website so I downloaded it and tried doing some tests with that as well. Same thing, VCD's only on the left, SVCD's worked fine but scrunched. I also downloaded the test MPG's that were on Kwag's site, burnt them as VCD and SVCD, the SVCD's were the correct width but scrunched; the VCD's were only occupying the left half of the screen apart from your Farscape clip. The farscape clip was perfect, full screen!
My question is, what did you do differently for your farscape clip?
I am particularly interested in your Video Size and Aspect Ratio's and your Advanced Video Source Settings and Video Arrange Method.
Would you mind posting another clip so that I can make sure that it was not a one off?!?!?
Some further information is:
Used Smartripper to rip the DVD, used DVD2AVI to frameserve into TMPGenc 2.53. (Pretty much following Sefy's guide, thanks Sefy!)
I have done everything in PAL. I also was annoyed about UK region 2 disks lacking additional features, so I moved to Australia where it is region 4, loads of extra features and PAL!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank's for the excellent information Bilbogod.
Now I know why your Farscape clip worked on my DVD player and Kwag's clips didn't. In the Video tab of settings, you have the size set to 352 x 288 whereas Kwag uses 352 x 576. I thought the whole bases of this way of producing high quality low MB mpg's was to double the height of the output video? Half D1??????
Are you getting the quality and size because of the modified GOP structure?
N.B. When I refer to Kwag's template, I mean his NTSC template that I modifed to PAL.
Tonight I will try the settings you have just posted.
Thanks again,
Reg.
