    Hello,

I want to use VirtualDub to convert my FRAPS videos into Xvid videos, with mp3 audio compression. VirtualDub opens the FRAPS videos fine, but when I go to video compression options, ffdshow (which is where I usually selected Xvid) doesn't show up. I have installed ffdshow. What could be the problem?

Also, I remember having to go through a grueling procedure to get mp3 compression, involving a long console command. How does that go again?

    Thanks.

    BTW I'm on Windows 7 x64.

Select FFDshow, under encoder select mpeg-4 or xvid, change the mode to one pass quantizer and drag the slider to 4 . That's a reasonable starting place. Usually LAME ACM is used for mp3 encoding, but I don't know i it it works in Win 7.

Well I installed that Xvid codec and it does show up in VirtualDub. Trying it now, it seems to work but is very slow.

In any case, I would really like to be able to use ffdshow as I had access to other codecs and was familiar with it. I don't need instructions on how to use it within VirtualDub, it doesn't show up in VirtualDub! I can't select it, it's not there! It's installed on the system, but for reason VirtualDub doesn't see it.

Does the download from Koepi work in Win 74 64-bit? I didn't realize that.

  6. 32 bit programs run in a separate environment in Windows 7 -- WoW (Windows on Windows). This means that 32 bit video editors require 32 bit codecs, 64 bit video editors require 64 bit codecs. The two don't mix. It sounds like you are trying access 32 bit ffdshow from 64 bit VirtualDub, or vice versa.

On top of that there is a problem where some installers put the files in the wrong place (32 bit dlls end up in the folder for 64 bit dlls, or vice versa) -- as is the case with LAME. So you have to manually fix the installation.

I dont use Win7, but still XP. But if you have problems with 32bit ffdshow in a 64bit environment you might want to upgrade ffdshow to 64bit (as proposed in previous replies):

    (general link)
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/

    (latest clsid 64bit build)
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/SVN%20builds%20by%20clsid/64-bit%...4.exe/download

LAME encoding using ACM as davexnet suggested take a look here:
    http://rarewares.org/mp3-lame-dshow-acm.php

For further reading on audio encoding using LAME you might want to check out there threads:

(Procedures in 64bit Win7 and Vista-64 shouldnt diverge too much, imho.)

Ok so it's really a 64 vs 32bit issue. I was able to get LAME MP3 working in VirtualDub 32-bit (by installing the ACM version in SysWow64), and I was able to get ffdshowx64 working in VirtualDub 64-bit. But not both in the same version. I got ffdshow 32bit installed too, but it doesn't show up in either VirtualDub versions, for some obscure reason.

So for now I use koepis Xvid + LAME in VirtualDub 32-bit.

To avoid any 32bit - 64bit issues probably the best thing to do...

Probably because the install copied the dll to the System32 folder (which is where 64 bit dlls reside) not to the SysWOW64 folder where 32 bit dlls should go. You may just be able to copy the dll there. Or you may also have to register it once it's there.

    <edit>

I just checked my 64 bit Win7 machine. It didn't have ffdshow (32 bit) installed (didn't show up in VirtualDub). I downloaded the latest version from this site and ran the EXE as Administrator. After installation it showed up in 32bit VirtualDub. So it looks like there are no manual changes you have to make.
