Is there a general rule of thumb (approximate) for video size when convertng DVD to MKV (X264 with original AC3)? That is, what size can you target to get minimal loss of quality. For example, if the total DVD size is 4485 meg, what would you target as final X264 size (in MB) with no change in resolution? Maybe 80% so 3588 meg? I know each DVD is different....just a general quick rule of thumg, if there is one.
thanks!!!

Since x264 offers great quality even at low bitrates I normally use bitrates between 1000 and 1500 plus HQ settings (subpixel refinement 10; trellis 2; multi-hex motion estimation etc.). Imho, this gives very nice results, although it is quite time-consuming...

not sure I want to have huge encode times....just simple two pass, larger size trade-off vs speed...which is why I am hoping 70-80% of original file size

I use MeGUI with altered HQ settings (that's why it's slow for me). MeGUI comes with loads of presets. I think the presets "x264: Unrestricted 2pass HQ/Balanced/Extra Quality" with their standard settings might suit your needs. Simply set the bitrate to eg. 1500-2000 and enable "turbo" for 1st pass. Worth a try, imo.

Use CRF mode and always get exactly the quality you want. Many people find CRF 18 to be nearly transparent.
