  1. Hello,
I have recently discovered the most wonderful NASA TV web site, that I view from there web page at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html
But as the programs are often on late or times when I am out I was wondering if there is a way that I can record them (video capture)? To my hard drive in some format that is playable on Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic.
Freeware would be nice as this is note commercial just something that would be nice to use from time to time.
    Many thanks in advance IMK

Were it me, I'd tivo those - unless you have a PC to capture with. The videos on the NASA site appear to be protected (like abc.com), but the video on youtube looks like it could be downloaded and played back.

    Classfour,
Sorry I may not have made my post clear, inasmuch as I view Nasa TV on my PC in the UK over the web. But I don't have any video capture type card in my PC, all I have is an ATI 1800 video card. Hence I was wondering is there was/is a software solution that I caould simply install in my PC and capture the explorer video window or possible full screen that NASA put out.
Again many thanks for your post IMK

    Hello MovieGeek.

Now this is what I love about the WEB… There is always someone smarter than yourself online.

What can I say other than thank you for the CamStudio recommendation….. Real easy to use and does the job I need. OK it may not be IMAX 3D quality but it is more than good enough for my simple requirement.

So many many thanks for the solution and recomendation.

  6. Try this link:

    mms://209.73.191.210/nqsenc003_d?StreamID=100841119&pl_auth=a65ff15dce6 1649ac62ab09bc8cbfd93&ht=120&pl_b=0044B4C29846B586 A23DCE0A794B817339&CG_ID=1369080&Segment=149773

I don't know if it's temporary or permanent. If it doesn't work try this ASX file:

CamStudio (or any similar screen capture software) is a last resort for this kind of thing. A lower quality re-encoding is the best it can produce.

Something like Replay Media Catcher (or a free equivalent, like Orbit Downloader) is the thing to try first - it can grab the actual stream without quality loss.

    Cheers,
    David.

  8. It's a few days later now... The mms link I posted no longer works. But the ASF file does. I was able to use VLC's Convert/Save function to save the ASF stream to an ASF file (with no video or audio conversion):

    1) In VLC select Media -> Convert/Save.

    2) Go to the Network tab of the Open Media dialog that pops up.

    3) Open the ASF file with Notepad, inside you'll see a link to "http://playlist.yahoo.com/makeplaylist.dll?id=1369080&segment=149773". Paste that into the Address field:

Name:	network.png
Views:	872
Size:	17.6 KB
ID:	499

    4) Press the Convert/Save button at the bottom of the dialog.

    5) At the Convert Dialog, to the right of the Profile label, ignore the pulldown and press the tool button to the right of it:

Name:	tool.png
Views:	922
Size:	15.9 KB
ID:	500

    6) At the next dialog set the encapsulation type to ASF/WMV, the Video Codec to Keep Original Video Track, the Audio Codec to Keep Original Audio Track, and Press Save.

    7) Back at the Convert Dialog select a Desitnation File name. Tick the Display The Output option if you want to see what's being captured.

    8) Press the Start button to start capturing.

    9) Press the Stop button on the main VLC window when you're done capturing.

Of course, this won't help you record in the middle of the night unattended. But there are many stream recording programs that can do that once you have the right link.
