Can anyone recommend a decent Blu-Ray player.

I had WinDVD BD pre-installed but then installed Win 7 so I lost it and the Sony site only offers the update

    Edit: Free would be nice

If this is the case, then that means that you have a licence for the software; contact your machine vendor, or WinDVD manufacturers to find out how to re-install it.

Failing that, you can rip the contents of the disk to your hard drive using freely available tools and then play it with VLC etc.

Yeah I'm also looking for a decent Blu-ray player. It's a coincidence I bought my first Blu-ray movie today.

PowerDVD is rubbish, I am waiting for VLC to support Blu-ray disc's

Because of restrictive licensing and BD encryption, you aren't likely to see many, if any at all, freeware BD players. If you run a decrypter program like AnyDVD HD, you can view the .m2ts files on a BD disc with VLC or several other freeware players. If the main movie is on one .m2ts file, easy enough. But some discs now spread that across several .m2ts files.

For payware BD players, I would recommend ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre. It is also one of the few players that can play a ripped BD movie from a hard drive.

That would suck. How ignorant can they be, they are bringing a new standard format out and now we can't play it on our PC's?
A standard format should be standard and not all these restrictions crap...

  6. If you rip the disc to hard drive with MakeMKV, then MPCHC (and others) will do just fine playing the MKV. Or rip with DVDFabHDDecrypter or AnyDVDHD and convert the rip to MKV with HDConvertToX or RipBot.

I use the player in TME, essentially the same as TMT. I have PowerDVD and don't care for it. Uninstalled.

Till a normal player supports Blu-ray I will get Blu-ray rips from internet.
I have to say I couldn't really see a difference from a 8GB MKV and that 35GB Bluray disc.
