Over the years, I created 100's of professional videos and gave them out on DVD's. I also kept copies of most and have discovered something. Something enlightening and awful at the same time.
If I stored my backups on any DVD-R or DVD+R silver tops, non-printable, they work perfectly. Anything stored on White tops, even ones not printed on will NOT play. This is awful. over 50% of my backups, gone.
Many of these were Tayo Yuden or other "good brands" . The drives or standalone DVD players wont read them. Most are 3 to 4 years old. I have silver ones 6 to 7 years old, play fine.
Thoughts ?

Specify "good brands".
Special where the "Taiyo Yuden" discs were bought.

t.y. inkjet printables only work well for me if burned at 4x(regardless of brand/model of burner), at their rated 8x they are un-readable in many players. verbatim datalifeplus 8x inkjet printables are my preferred discs.

Lordsmurf, that is entirely possible...When purchased, I was buying in bulk from tapestockonline.com
Way back when (if you remember me) I am sure I checked the DVD media codes as I was VERY big into that stuff and they checked out...but still they are ALL fubar...I have no way of checking. I do have a spindle with some remaining 10 or so that work, not sure if I bought at the same time, same locale...probably not.
But I was buying hundeds delivered as non-spindled 50's that I would just use my old spindles. Why would they just go unreadable if they were never printed on..burned yes, but no print. No scratches, no exposure to heat or light. Hmm....Wonder if I could send you one...?The answer is always easy for the person who has it.... -
Try extracting with IsoBuster or DVDFab Decrypter then make backups, nobody said DVDR would last forever.

Ahh..but for the tool to work, the drive has to recognize a disk...it doesn't ..it just chugs and chugs....same in a standalone player sigh

Your drive might be the problem.

In a nutshell...YES.I remember back in 2006 - 2007 period , I went from the PRODISCS (which were actually fine) to taiyo yudens. well, you order a few, check one or two and all is well. Next thing you know, I am burning RITEK05's and screwed.
BTW ..just checked my leftover spindle - Checked a blank with DVD INFO just to see what I have - They are Taiyo Yuden TYG03...so that tells me THEY WERE MIXED...UGGGG...Bastages !!!!

"Good" and "new" aren't necessarily the same.
RITEKG05 doesn't burn well, and it read/played even worse. Since you never tested each disc in detail, you can't say anything has "died" or "disappeared" on you. It was more likely never a good burn to start with.
If the disc/burn is at least marginal, then a really good drive should still have the ability to read it.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)
